[UPDATE: Open] Hwy 101 Closed Due to Slide on Last Chance Grade
About 4:30 p.m., a hillside with trees slumped onto Hwy 101 at mile marker 14.75 in Del Norte County. Traffic is completely stopped in both directions. The slide has completely blocked the road just north of Rudisill Road on Lost Chance Grade. There is no estimated time of reopening.
However, according to Phil Frisbee, spokesperson for Caltrans, “Slides are better that slipouts because you can move the material out of the way” instead of having to bring in material and rebuild the roadway. This could mean a quicker reopening.
“The trees mean it will take longer to clear though,” Frisbee explained. “Large debris will slow down cleanup.”
UPDATE 5:40 p.m.: Caltrans has posted photos of the slide:
UPDATE 7:38 p.m.: Caltrans reports, “Some trees have been removed, and traffic has been reopened to one-way traffic control unit 9 pm. At that time there will be a full closure for 4+ hours to remove the slide.
Caltrans QuickMap will provide the latest information about whether it is open or closed.
UPDATE Saturday: Here’s the latest information: Hwy 101 North Open at Last Chance Grade

Will we soon become an island, like Big Sur? Hoping that the funds from the Humboldt pot tax will go toward road maintenance, as we are all dependent on it, including the growers.
That’s a slippery slope. Roads and rail encourage industry. We don’t want any of that in Humboldt county now, do we?
We already pay a grip of money for taxes, and many taxes should be going to roads…such as gasoline taxes.
Living in coastal hills through an above average winter you shouldn’t expect everything to perform perfectly perfect. You like it where you are, then deal with the downsides too.
But, again, we already pay $ for roads.
Stop asking for fat cats to get fatter when you don’t even know what they are eating!
Wonder what they will do with the trees, need some fire wood
Re-opened to one way traffic about 6:20pm local time. My wife just went through there.
Any up dates on last chance slide???
This is why we need a bypass. Caltrans is dragging it on in my opinion. Get the dam grants and California needs to stop all the BS FOR SANCTUARY. WE NEED THE FEDERAL MONEY
anyone know if its open?
