Lady Cubs Softball 4-4 in Early Season

South Fork High’s Lady Cubs got off to a rough start at the annual Redding Tournament two weekends ago, dropping all four games, but bounced back to sweep two doubleheaders, the first in Miranda last Tuesday against Potter Valley and the second in Point Arena on the road last Friday.

Before the tournament, the Lady Cubs had virtually no outdoor practice time due to the incessant rain. Senior pitcher and center fielder Sabrina Miclette said, “We played 3 games on Friday, and we haven’t been used to any heat in so hum, so the heat was a little bit of a battle for us. We struggled in the 1st inning of a couple games but the other innings were well played. For only a few days outside before this tournament, I think we played great.”

Despite the disappointing results, Miclette is not worried. “Our team is working together very well and we all have really positive attitudes! I see a really good season ahead of us with this group of girls this year.”

Indeed the Cubs improved greatly by the time they took the field for their home opener last Tuesday. They destroyed Potter Valley 30-4 and 33-6. Then on the following Friday they handled Point Arena 14-2 and 17-7.

The Lady Cubs have two new pitchers this year. Miclette is self taught and sophomore Anjoliena Girard is showing outstanding promise after putting in time training for two seasons in the Humboldt fast pitch league. “Anjoliena and Sabrina did great despite neither of them pitching last year,” said junior third baseman Kylee Girard.

Senior catcher Victoria Van Meter has also been pitching, carrying the burden of two difficult positions while achieving one of the higher batting averages on the team. Van Meter has 20 hits and no errors so far on the season.

With sure handed first baseman and slugger senior Gabi Moore on currentle on the DL, several Lady Cubs have stepped into new defensive roles and holding down the fort. Junior Kamia Way, and sophomores Regina Salomon and Kylee Savio have been plaing first in her absence.

Sophomore Jasmine Todd gets her uniform dirty every game diving for grounders at second, and is also backing up Van Meter behind the plate.

The Lady Cubs were gifted many walks and got enough hits to end all four games on the mercy rule.

Up next for the Cubs, weather permitting, will be the league opener against St. Bernard’s at home on Tuesday, March 29. They were rained out against Laytonville on Tuesday, March 22.

Pitching is so very important in softball so here’s hoping that the Cubs can continue this improvement. And the weather needs to improve as well! Go Cubs!
