Fortuna Man Pleads Guilty to Sexually Abusing Daughter
Press release from the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office:
Humboldt County District Attorney Maggie Fleming announced that yesterday, Moises Camarillo Saldana, a 38-year-old former resident of Fortuna, pled guilty to committing sexual intercourse with a child ten years of age or younger and oral copulation of a child under 16 years, both felonies under California Penal Code Section 288. Saldana’s plea followed the powerful testimony of his 17-year-old daughter, who described the years of sexual abuse by Saldana that she had endured. After the guilty plea, Judge Miles sentenced Saldana to serve 28 years to life in prison, the maximum allowed.
Saldana abused his daughter when she was 9 to 14 years old. Education provided by teachers and others helped Saldana’s daughter understand her father had abused her and that she needed to tell someone. At 14 years of age she had the courage to face her fears – which included the fear of losing her family – and told her step-mother that she had been raped by her father.
Mr. Saldana has been in custody at the Humboldt County Correctional Facility since the crime was reported to the Fortuna Police Department in September 2014. Fortuna Police Officer Brian Taylor investigated the crimes with the assistance of the Child Abuse Services Team (“CAST”). Forensic Interviewer Jed Mefford conducted the interview of the child. District Attorney (DA) Investigator Kyla Baxley served as lead investigator throughout the case. DA Investigator Jack Bernstein also assisted in the investigation.
The prosecutor in the case, Deputy District Attorney Stacey Eads, stated: “I greatly respect and appreciate the key witness in this case. Some measure of justice was achieved only because of her bravery and strength. I would also like to particularly recognize the efforts of DA Investigator Baxley, whose determination and exceptional abilities were critical to the outcome of the case.”

Wow am so impressed and humbled by this amazingly courageous young woman. You are speaking for the many of us who have not had the strength to do what you have done.
Many thanks to you for leading the way and breaking through your fear, i can only imagine how immensely challenging that must have been.
Its literally awe inspiring. I do not know if i could do that even now in my 40’s.
Just when you think some people couldn’t get much worse, This guy shows up.
Makes me fucking sick! that poor little girl wtf I hope she has an amazing life and can put this behind her she must be so strong already, thank god she had the power to come forward! that must of been really hard to do. Sending love and prayers to her
Burn in hell you filthy piece of shit
So proud of her for coming forward. I hope she is able to emotionally heal and lead a healthy, happy life. Thank good he got a real sentence and I hope they don’t grant him solitary to protect him. [edit]

Prayers for a long ,happy, successful and peaceful life and my heart goes out to the brave young lady.
I know this is random because of the privacy for the victim. I wish we as a society could start a healing fund and/or education fund for her to help and show community support. Any ideas?
It’s a great idea. It would have to be a grassroot effort as any funding would not be from federal sources. Perhaps a small piece of our taxes from Prop S instead of pitching it all towards law enforcement.
WOW. I was sick knowing it was a young girl, but to be his daughter???????! Is that enough question marks? He is done in prison.
Its about time an actual threat to the community criminal was given a lengthy sentence in this county! Although torture or at least life with no parole would have been much better for this worthless parasite.
You should have the death penalty for touching your child but you should also have the death penalty for killing a child like Marcy did two children we all forget about faith Tsarnas.
You act like she killed on purpose. So easy to hate.
I guess the hit-and-run part was an accident two she didn’t even go back to check on her daughter who wasn’t even dead.
No one has forgotten that bi@#$
We don’t forget about Faith or Kiya, they just haven’t had their justice served up yet. And plenty of nice letters to our DA could help . Bless those children.
I wish we could find a way to support her education.
I guess luckily but very very sad faith died instantly and that’s OK with you to
