[UPDATE 1:42 p.m.] Man Allegedly Fired One Round and May Be Suicidal

Breaking news graphicLaw enforcement is responding to the report that a man attempted suicide with a rifle near Mill Creek Road in the Hoopa area but, when family members attempted to stop him, he fired one round and pointed the gun threateningly.

The situation was reported about 10:48 a.m. The juvenile who is reporting the situation is hiding in the bushes nearby.

As we began publishing, we learned from scanner traffic that the RP (reporting person) says the suspect is currently walking up and down the roadway and no longer has the weapon.

UPDATE 11:20 a.m.: According to the scanner, the aunt of the suspect says he is distraught over the death of a family member. In an ominous reference to law enforcement, the suspect allegedly said, “Be ready because he is ready to dance.”

UPDATE 11:21 a.m: Officers are talking to the suspect.

UPDATE 12:18 p.m.: The scanner has been cleared for only emergency traffic as the situation appears to get more tense.

UPDATE 1:42 p.m.: One man, Tom Jones, was arrested. Before law enforcement got on scene, family members took possession of the suspect’s firearm. Deputies from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene and were assisted by Tribal Resource officers, and officer from the California Highway Patrol.

There was a short struggle but then the suspect was arrested for probation violation, resisting arrest, and also resisting arrest with threat or violence.

Because the firearm was no longer in the suspect’s possession, Stacy Hanson a spokesperson for the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office said that they “can’t prove or disprove that shots were fired before deputies got on scene.”

Thank you LEO’s for being able to get to Tom and may he get the help he needs. Thank you auntie for communicating well with the LEOs. Thank you young teen for calling for help, may your family be comforted in their time of immense grief and may folks gathering around you with all the help they can give.

Yes, mental health issues make it so hard on the person, the family, the community and the first responders.

Sad to say that only a scant handful of folk showed up for the town hall meeting on mental health issues for children and teens last week at Hoopa Valley Elementary School.

Kym,

Thank you for not appreciating humanity and running people in to the ground on a routine basis. You continue to undermine society, daily. Congratulations.
