The green hills of the Emerald Triangle are sprinkled with a light dusting of snow today but the rest of the day should be sunny. Tomorrow, however, there could be five to nine inches of snow down to about 1500 feet.

Here is what we know about specific problems on roads frequented by Emerald County Residents at this point. As more information comes in, we’ll update in blue.

Major Highways:

(Most information below from Caltrans’ Quick Map. If you are heading to Oregon, check their similar site.)

Our engineer at the site estimates that last night’s slide activity dumped more material onto the roadway than we’ve been able to remove since the slide began in early January.

There is still no estimate as to when the roadway will reopen to traffic.”

  • Hwy 3: Open
  • Hwy 20: Open to one way traffic. Expect some short delays. (Note: Hwy 16 is blocked)
  • Hwy 36:  Starting three miles west of Mad River, Caltrans warns

Chains are required on all vehicles except passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks under 6,000 pounds gross weight and equipped with snow tires on at least two drive wheels. Chains must be carried by vehicles using snow tires. All vehicles towing trailers must have chains on one drive axle. Trailers with brakes must have chains on at least one axle.

  • Hwy 96:
    • According to Caltrans, “SR 96 is reduced to one lane with traffic control at Cade Mountain (Siskiyou CO) due to a slip-out. Motorists should expect delay. Conditions subject to change.”
    • Slide closed road at mile marker 42 north of Orleans. (Might clear later today.)
    • Hwy 101:
      • Road open but traffic delayed. Crews clearing rocks from slide north of Laytonville. (See here for more info.)
      • (Traffic delays on 101 north of Weott.)

  • Hwy 254 (Avenue of the Giants):
    • Closed from Holmes Flat to Barkdull Road.
  • Hwy 255: Open
  • Hwy 271: Open
  • Hwy 299:

Its called climate change. Tell it to bolivia, theyre out if water as theur glaciers are gone. Gone.
You cant ruin the ozone and raise ocean water temperatures and think there will be no consequence. Its been warmer in the antartctic than here. Sunny and 60° in new york city.
Just wait for whats to come in the next 5 winters. This one will be remembered as mild comparatively. No joke. Even if we cut all emissions right now it’d take at least 5 years to come back close to center. Not propaganda or scare tactics, just reality. There are many many great easy to follow models online of how climate change is playing out. Its pretty simple science. I read a great one back in 1997. Too bad no one listened then.

Why is the weather “screwed” up? Wow 57 years is sooooo much experience in observing the weather, he must know everything and anything about the weather. I bet every meteorologists in the world consults this guy on weather advice (and no that person on TV standing in front of a green screen is NOT a meteorologists) Keep in mind the earth is 4+ billion years old.
Why are humans so convinced weather is supposed to be the same day after day, year after year? The weather is dynamic it is part of the dynamic earth. It changes, it is not stagnant.
So now you got a bunch of misinformed people going “OH NOES! The climate is changing, you have to do something about it!” So humans engineer and build new machines further compounding the problem to try and “fix” something that can not be fixed because it can not ever be broken. Unless we engineer some machine that taps into our fragile thin magnetosphere and turn it off or glitch it and bye-bye atmosphere (oh oops they built HAARP). Your underground bunkers won’t even help if that happens.

Also lucky it isn’t on it’s side with all the chemicals draining out. Had to have been going a little too fast for the road.

I obviously saw the tracks when I went by, it just seems like you would have to try to get that far up the hill on a down hill right corner with the driver side in the ditch
