The National Weather Service predicts that an “atmospheric river” will pour over northern California tonight. They warn, “This storm will bring multiple inches of precipitation across the region.” Watch for flooding in low lying areas. By Tuesday the rain should turn into showers.

High winds should slow down during the morning today but return this afternoon.

Expect the roads to continue to deteriorate as rains and windy weather persist. Below is what we know about specific problems on roads frequented by Emerald County Residents at this point. As more information comes in, we’ll update in blue.

Major Highways:

(Most information below from Caltrans’ Quick Map. If you are heading to Oregon, check their similar site.)

  • Hwy 1: Closed in both direction just west of Leggett. (See here for more info.) Note Quickmaps shows it is open but local resident says it is still closed.
  • Hwy 3: Open
  • Hwy 20: According to Caltrans, “One way controlled traffic from 5.5 miles east of the Jt of State Route 16 to the E Street in Williams.” (Note: Hwy 16 is blocked)
  • Hwy 36: Open
  • Hwy 96:
    • According to Caltrans, “SR 96 is reduced to one lane with traffic control at Cade Mountain (Siskiyou CO) due to a slip-out. Motorists should expect delay. Conditions subject to change.”
  • Hwy 101: Open (Traffic delays of about 20 minutes on 101 north of Weott.)
  • Hwy 169: Open (One lane blocked.)
  • Hwy 199: Open
  • Hwy 211: Open (Check out the Fernbridge live cam)
  • Hwy 254 (Avenue of the Giants):

  • Hwy 271: Open

The NWS was calling today “Washington’s Birthday” on their website instead of President’s Day. The best prez ever’s b-day is the 22nd. Hilarious.

It depends on which calendar you use

“George Washington was born in Virginia on February 11, 1731, according to the then-used Julian calendar. In 1752, however, Britain and all its colonies adopted the Gregorian calendar which moved Washington’s birthday a year and 11 days to February 22, 1732.”

Me too!!
Nature called to remind us who bats last.
We do live in a temperate rainforest after all.
Nothings free, this is one of the trade offs of getting to live in such an amazing and beautiful area. Feels like a deal to me! 🙂

asphalt and concrete will make up a substantial portion of the river rocks before too long. we’re goin down like a short rotation redwood forest. we wont last much longer at this rate. then the sun will come out and everything will be fine. but just imagine when all the rivers were 20 feet deep all summer.
