Back in Business: Redwoods Rural Opens Back Up After Evacuation Scare
Redwoods Rural Health Center (RRHC) Medical Building is excited to announce we’re back in business and will re-open on February 20 after being closed this last week for facility maintenance.
Following the HAZMAT inspection on Feb. 8, 2017, RRHC fixed a problematic sewer drain and replaced the filters to the heating and air conditioning system. As discussed with the Humboldt County Division of Environmental Health, RRHC hired a certified industrial hygienist to conduct an indoor environmental quality investigation. Forensic Analytical Consulting Services (FACS) inspected the building and tested the air quality to ensure it was safe for reoccupation. FACS’s inspection concluded:
- No notable sources of airborne contaminants were observed during the inspection.
- No unusual odors were observed at the time of the inspection.
- Indoor air quality (IAQ) parameters such as relative humidity (RH), temperature, carbon dioxide (CO2) and airborne particulates were all within normal ranges for similar indoor environments.
- No detectable concentrations of toxic gases such as ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide, pentachlorophenol, chlorine gas, nitric oxide or nitrogen dioxide.
Moreover, concentrations of detectable volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were all much lower than occupational exposure limits (OEL) such as CalOSHA permissible exposure limits and NIOSH recommended exposure limits (REL). Additionally, concentrations were all less than Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) Acute, 8-hour and Chronic Reference Exposure Levels (REL) where applicable.
RRHC also conducted mold tests which detected very small amounts of spores that are common in outdoor environments, especially after rainfall. Therefore, the investigation results indicate conditions that present no identified health risk to occupants.
Because Redwoods Rural Health Center is conscientious about the importance of providing a safe and comfortable atmosphere for employees and patients, RRHC completed preventive facility maintenance, including:
- Inspections by roofers to identify and fix potential leaks
- Cleaning and sanitization of the entire duct work of the heating and air conditioning system
- Professional carpet cleaning using natural, non-toxic cleaning solutions
- Installation of HEPA filtration systems in the building
Thank you for your patience, flexibility and continued support for Redwoods Rural Health Center. If you have any questions about your upcoming appointments, call RRHC at 707-923-2783 Monday–Friday from 8:15 am – 5:30 pm.
Sincerely,
Tina Tvedt Schaible, Executive Director

We didn’t find the problem but we are now happy to say that we’ll be open February 20th!
Someone passing out and some others feeling ill should not be shined on or taken lightly. Their customers come to their business to get well. I bet on the open sewer line as being the problem. If there is no trap or the trap is dry the sewer gases are able to permeate the air inside the building. Where are the maintenance people for this business?
Maybe some of their neighbors are using the sewer system to dispose of toxic waste.
Troubleshooting this way doesn’t always work out. I hope they got lucky and did actually
find the problem.
The skeleton in the waiting room seems a little bit ironic to me.
The skeleton in the waiting room tells you everything you need to know about RRHC.
Transparency would be appreciated.
The test results are public domain and so are the costs.
Can we find this information online?
Thank you Kym.
I don’t see any. You could try calling RRHC.
Let me tell you what happens when i or any ordinary citizen calls rrhc.
They will tell me to take a hike or give me the run around.
You seem to have more pull kym and this is your forte.
Most county employees dont feel as if they owed taxpayers any answers.
They are not even telling the staff who work there anything 😯
So this is your cue kym. Lets have you give it a try.
Its time our funds get a track and trace program.
Now go after the stench from SHCHD, most likely coming from Administration… Vote no on the parcel tax!!!!
Jerold Phelps Hospital has been making people sick (and dead) for years. When do we close IT?
RRHC was NOT open on February 20. Neither was the dental clinic. My son had an appointment on Monday that had been scheduled for six months. We received two robot calls over the weekend reminding us of his appointment. When I called Monday morning to confirm, their answering service informed me they were closed for President’s Day.
Yikes…I hope you can get this straightened out.
