A small slide is currently blocking Hwy 271. That tiny rural route became the main road out of Humboldt County to the south when a slide blocked Hwy 101 by Piercy earlier today. (See here)

Caltrans spokesperson Eli Rohl thinks that the slide on 271 will be removed quickly but, if not…we don’t want to alarm anyone but our southern route out of Humboldt County–Hwy 101–and our two eastern routes out–Hwy 36 and Hwy 299–are currently closed…

UPDATE 2:46 p.m.: Rohl said that Caltrans will temporarily reopen Hwy 101 to allow traffic through the area. “[T]here’s a potential for more slide activity on 101 and it’s unlikely we’ll leave traffic on it tonight, but for now it’s the best option.”

UPDATE 3:37 p.m.: Hwy 101 is currently open, according to Rohl.
