Pedestrian Dies After Collision Yesterday
On January 23, 2017 at about 9:55 a.m., officers with the Eureka Police Department responded to F and Harris Streets in Eureka for the report of an injury traffic collision involving a vehicle and pedestrian. The pedestrian was transported by ambulance to the hospital, but ultimately succumbed to her injuries. Next of kin has been notified and the victim has been identified as Maria Bosnar, 80 of Eureka.
The preliminary investigation indicates that a 57 year old male of Eureka was driving a 1987 Toyota pickup east on Harris Street and was stopped at the red light at F Street. Bosnar was at the north east corner of Harris and F Street waiting to cross F Street. The light turned green for the driver and Bosnar had the walk sign to cross. The driver made a left turn onto F Street and collided with the Bosnar in the crosswalk causing fatal injuries.
DUI does not appear to be a factor in the collision. This is an ongoing investigation; any witnesses to this collision are asked to call Sergeant Gary Whitmer at (707) 441-4060.

Sad that a person has died. Trying to understand how a driver could not see someone crossing the road.
Distracted driving is always a possibility.
Turning left (or right but less speed ), moves the window pillar across your view at the same speed a pedestrian may be moving..a nasty coincidence, hiding a pedestrian from view.
All parties need to be very concerned at all intersections always.
nasty weather, lack of bright clothing, high lights from background lights or other traffic, and distractions all conspire against pedestrian safety.
this is bad luck all around, my condolences to her family and friends.
RIP Maria Bosner
Yep, I’ve noticed that window pillar thing occasionally when driving and it is really startling when a person of slight build is obscured. Big trucks are an issues to as someone noted before. Sad
Trucks 10 feet high, coupled with cell phones=tragedy.
Its may be that thing we all tend to do here and there, turning right and looking left for cars and stepping on the gas while slowly starting your right turn before actually looking right, where people may be crossing. Drivers ed taught look right then left then right again. For me i have to remind myself at one way streets look again for peds.
Mckinleyville now has crosswalks with flashing lights and a neon green color painted on the bike lanes.
Perhaps Eureka needs to do the same, especially in areas like Henderson where there are a lot of pedestrians and businesses.
Condolences to the family, RIP to the lady who passed, and to the driver condolences as well. That kinda thing must haunt you.
The article says the person was turning left, and I recall in driver’s ed. being taught to look left, right, then left.
Sounds like what is commonly called “an accident”
I cannot imagine how terrible the driver is feeling right now
who began to advance first? if she was walking forward with the vehicle before it turned left, she would have had to have entered the intersection first to be struck by the vehicle making a left turn, because she’d be at least half way across the street. if she was walking the opposite direction of the vehicle before it turned left, then the vehicle had already entered the intersection before she stepped off the sidewalk to cross the street.
nevermind, details in article, duh….
Condolences to the family. The driver stopped, which is what you do!!I’m sure the driver is up set.Accidents happen!!God bless to all involved.
He stopped , very good point.
The Attorney for the plaintiffs family is going to call it Negligence. It’s left right left then center, re pete. Sorry Maria. RIP.
In Oregon, you can not turn left or right until the pedestrian is completely off the street and on sidewalk…at first it seemed like a waste of time, but it is a good law..it saves people’s lives..
That is the law here as well unfortunately people ignore it.
