[UPDATE 10:28 p.m.] Roads and Weather, Tuesday
Though yesterday was pretty wet, today is expected to be very stormy with high winds and heavy rains at times. “Thunderstorms will be possible around coastal areas and the near interior this afternoon and evening,” reports the National Weather Service. “Dark clouds could mean there are hail covered roads ahead.”
The winds could down more trees–closing roads and causing even more power outages (keep track here.) The heavy rains could mean ponding on the road and possibly some flooding of low lying areas.
Below we’re keep you updated with the latest information on road condition throughout the day below.
Weather update 2 p.m.: According to the National Weather Service, “Heavy rain rates have ended, with lighter rain filling in. However, main stem rivers will continue to rise over the next 12-24 hrs.”
UPDATES in green below.
Major Highways:
(Most information below from Caltrans’ Quick Map. If you are heading to Oregon, check their similar site.)
- HWY 1:
- Caltrans reports this is “closed about 1.5 miles west of U.S. Highway 101 in Mendocino County is closed due to an active slide. It is not known how long it will remain closed.”
- “They are hauling truckload after truckload of mud out at a steady pace,” reports Pamela Robinson, a local resident. “2No telling when Hwy 1 will be open because the slide keeps coming down.”
- It is also closed at Manchester.
- Hwy 3: According to Caltrans, near Fort Jones “Chains, traction devices or snow tires are required on the drive axle of all vehicles except four wheel or all wheel drive vehicles.”
- Hwy 36:
- Beginning at the Junction with Hwy 3, Caltrans says, “Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four wheel / all wheel drive vehicles with snow treaded tires on all wheels.”
- Slide near Forest Glen currently clear but it needs constant work.
- As of 2:29 p.m. Caltrans warns, “Due to the predicted flooding of the Van Duzen River in Humboldt County, Route 36 may be placed under a full closure this afternoon or this evening. Predictions for the monitoring station near Grizzly Creek State Park suggest the river will crest at 19’4”, which could inundate Route 36 and create unsafe traveling conditions. If these conditions exist, we’ll be forced to close the highway until floodwaters recede.
- Hwy 96: According to Caltrans, beginning at two miles east of Happy Camp, “Trucks and vehicles pulling trailers require chains, traction devices or snow tires on the drive axle of all vehicles except four wheel or all wheel drive vehicles.”
- Hwy 101: Currently mostly clear. Lots of water and mud
- Mud, water, and miscellaneous debris between Laytonville and the Covelo Road [Hwy 162] turnoff.
- Willits is very wet. Photo from the Mendocino County Sheriff.
- Hwy 199: Mostly clear. No chains required.
- Hwy 254 (Avenue of the Giants): Closed likely overnight due to downed trees between Myers Flat and Burlington. (For the latest information, click here.)

I’m supposed to go to an appointment in Arcata today from grizzly bluff wondering if anyone know if waddington is flooded in ferndale? Thanks y’all stay dry and warm💗
It’s open, just the usual light flooding just north of Grizzly Bluff. That won’t be an issue for any vehicle to cross over.
Cal-trans or chp,would no.but there’s a pretty good chance it is.good luck stay dry
Even if the bluffs in between redway and garberville are open today, I’m taking the long way around. F that.
Be safe!!
My sentiments exactly! I’ve had nightmares about being pushed into the river by rocks from the bluffs. Don’t need it to really happen.
Yeah right they should of fenced the whole bluff instead of half of it if the fence will even hold big boulders….
I live about 5 miles east of the Carlotta post office near Hwy 36 and for the first time ever received a recorded emergency alert message on the phone about the Van Duzen going to flood stage this afternoon and the possibility of Hwy 36 being impacted.
Anybody know about any actual flooding/standing water on Hwy 36 at this time?
It flooded like that in 97′. My grandma owned the property right before (now fire station) on 36. It was up past my knees in our front yard. I’m curious why ppl didn’t heed the farmers almanac warnings of wet wet wet this winter.
Tree down across 101 near Weott.

Smallish tree blocking NB lane of the Ave just north of Miranda.
Does anyone know what Briceland and Old Briceland are like, just in case both ways into Redway are closed?
