[UPDATE 5:05 p.m.] Multiple Accidents Snarl Roads and Send Injured to Hospital

The weather has completely snarled roads throughout Humboldt County. As of 4:19 p.m. there are eight accidents in Humboldt. Here’s a glimpse of what the California Highway Patrol Incident page shows.

“We’ve got cars all over the place,” said emergency dispatch in reference to accidents near Tompkins Hill on Hwy 101 but she could have been talking about county and state roads throughout the area.

Rather than do separate posts, we’ll do the best we can to keep you updated here.

At approximately 3:50 p.m., multiple vehicles went off Hwy 101 in the northbound lanes just north of the Hookton Road exit. (See earlier story here.)  First a black Kia spun out. Then a Jeep stopped on shoulder and to help. According to Officer Andrew Howell of the California Highway Patrol, a Yaris going too fast for conditions struck the Jeep. A red Dodge Neon swerved to miss them all. It went off the road and was stuck in the mud temporarily.

The owner of the Jeep stated that he pulled over and was trying to help the people in the Kia. He looked up, saw the Yaris and knew it was going too fast. He told his buddy get out of the way. They both jumped out of the Yaris’ path just in the nick of time.

Ultimately, an ambulance carried five people to the hospital from that accident.

We’ll be updating on other accidents below as we sort them out.

UPDATE 5 p.m.: A few minutes before 4 p.m. a Nissan Frontier struck the embankment about 1.5 miles from Hwy 101 on Hwy 36. Power lines were knocked down. One person was sent to the hospital. Approximately, 160 residents lost electricity. There is no estimated time for the power to be restored.

UPDATE 5:05 p.m.: About 4:30 p.m. a grey and gold van hit the roadside on Hwy 299 near Cedar Creek Road west of Willow Creek. No one was injured.

Or drive like you have sense. It’s called driving according to conditions. People are dumb af, driving in the storms we have, going WAY too fast, generally on crappy tires, and in compacts like a effing YARIS…… Some people have no business with a drivers license or a vehicle….. I see this sort of stupidity daily while commuting between Eureka and Fortuna.

Yeah, slow the hell DOWN if the rain is horizontal or there is snow or ice or you can’t see through the fog or whatever. No texting unless you pull over. Ever.

Yes, please slow down. The speed limit is actually supposed to be a maximum, but even if you laugh that off, at least agree that it’s sure not a minimum, nor is it some kind of guaranteed safe speed for all conditions.

Slow WAY down for waterlogged and sleet conditions and reduce your chances of sending yourself and others to the hospital and your car to the junk yard.

I like your style g-ma. My job called me out at 2 am last night in the driving sleet, but others were heeding you. I drove between Eureka and Arcata round trip, and have never seen the roads so empty. I think I saw one other car. At least I could go slow without getting in anyone’s way.

I drove past several of these accidents, including the one on Table Bluff hill… while I was going past the rescuers at 50mph, I was passed by a couple of people driving enormous pickup trucks going much too fast and swerving lane to lane like leaving lines in the snow/slush/sleet is some kind of game.

Slow down party people… or you will slow down for sure when you hit something. Try driving with the old grey matter instead of your goonies for a change.
