Snow Falling on Mountain Passes, Predicted Down to 1000′
The National Weather Service reminded everyone this morning that a Winter Weather Advisory…
…is in effect through 10:00 PM Monday January 2nd, 2017 as periods of snow showers are forecast for Northwest California. Snow levels will dramatically drop to roughly 1000 feet with 4 to 7 inches of snow forecast from Sunday into Sunday night.
Coastal areas, even as low as sea level, may see a few snow flakes but little to no accumulation is expected in these areas. Highways at pass level are expected to see chain requirements due to dangerous driving conditions from this inclement weather.

Berry summit or Barry summit?
Pretty sure it’s Berry… and the second webcam looks like 199, not 299. In eureka area right now, no snow here – and the forecast has gone from 20F to 42F.
Barry White?
=)
Yep….It is 199. Fixed it. Somehow I deleted the correct caption and put in the wrong one when I posted.
There is a few inches of snow in Gasquet and maybe another inch or so as low Hiouchi.
Bury the highway
Supposed to be Berry but for some reason I make that mistake over and over again. Sigh…
Too hard on yourself, Kym. To err is human, and you get so much right!
Agreed!
I keep trying to get it right the first time. Failing that I admit it and fix it (I wish I had to do less of the latter though…)
Berry
“Berry” Summit is actually Barry Summit. I believe that when Highway 299 was a series of toll roads in the 19 Century, that section of road was owned and maintained by (William?) BARRY. Cal Trans has the name of the summit wrong.
What is the other pass between Oregon Mtn and Berry Smt?
there isn’t one, first hill is lord ellis, second hill is berry summit, then it flattens out till Oregon mtn
That would be Buckhorn Mtn
Starting to snow here in Laytonville 🙂
No snow in my part of Bridgeville, YET!!! Tonight when the temperature drops with the sun, if the Snow Level comes down to 1,000 feet, as predicted, I’m sure we will then, if not before!!!!
Snow? The low is 34 tonight….
All depends on where you live, altitude, and micro climate.
Exactly BBS!!! 8~D
Negative Paul Jensen. Buckhorn is not between Berry and Oregon.
Started to lightly snow around 1:30 in Big Bar, elevation approximately 1600 ft. No snow at all at 3:20; 40 degrees now. Right now I am seeing blue sky; Oregon mountain is clear and Buckhorn looks wet, no snow.
Couple years ago in Rio Dell we got snow on the ground maybe half an inch accumulation. The ground temperature was like 38 .
I remember in I think 1972, about six inches of snow on Harrison Ave, in Eureka.
Kym,
Any news on 101?
As of 5:17 p.m., there is snow/hail in the road between Orick and Klamath but so far open.
At my elevation in willow creek (2400)it’s only a wet snow, and the cold temperatures forecast for later this week (which had me checking for antifreeze in my truck) have been dialed back. I was hoping for some real winter :/
Snow on paradise ridge accumulating on ground . King peak also a little .
Titlow?
