[UPDATE Monday] Road and Weather Conditions

snow on road through front windshieldSnow, hail, and ice are impacting roads across the Emerald Counties. Highways 3 and 36 have chains required.

Hwy 101 is being impacted also. A reader contacted us with the photo to the left. She reports that snow and hail were coming down at the same time between Orick and Klamath.

Currently (10:09 p.m.), the California Highway Patrol Incident page shows there is an accident on Hwy 101 at Sunset Ave offramp near Arcata. They report there is snow on the road.

Another accident occurred on Hwy 101 near Rio Dell (10:06 p.m.). A solo vehicle struck the guardrail. The roadway is icy according to the CHP Incident page.

Although, there are no active reports of problems on Hwy 299, traffic cam images earlier showed snow on Berry Summit.

According to the National Weather Service,

Numerous showers are moving moving onto the coast and inland tonight, and this will continue through at least Tuesday morning. Snow levels are already quite low, but will fall even farther as colder air sinks into the area…Small hail can also be expected along the immediate coast, and even a few flakes of snow will be possible at sea level early tomorrow morning. Remember that even more snow is expected later tomorrow through Wednesday as well. Be careful driving inland and carry chains!

More information plus a map can be seen by clicking here.

UPDATE 10:51 p.m.: The CHP Incident page reports there is snow on Hwy 299 at the intersection with 96. A request has been put in for a plow.

A snowplow has been requested for Hwy 101 near the Mill Creek Campground south of Crescent City.

UPDATE 11:22 p.m.: Hwy 96 has five people stuck in the snow “near the dumps,” per the CHP Incident page.

Does anyone know if it’s snowing south along 101 and Hwy 20? Family are supposed to be heading home to Auburn today from SoHum but we might get to keep them another day if it is.
