Traffic is backed up in both directions on Hwy 101 in northern Mendocino between Hwy 1 and the Peg House. At 12:53 p.m. a Jeep went off the roadway and down the embankment at approximately mile marker 93.9, according to the California Highway Patrol Incident page. The vehicle apparently struck a pole because pole is down and a live line is across Hwy 101. PG&E is out to approximately 350 customers. PG&E is estimating that service will not be restored until about 5:45 p.m.

CHP dispatch says only northbound is closed by a reader is telling us that traffic is stopped in both directions.

UPDATE 2:30 p.m.: According to Alysha Valier, southbound traffic began moving a few minutes ago. She said, “Looks like they let about 15 cars go north in the beginning then stopped both ways for a bit,” Then she said that southbound traffic began going. This sounds like the pattern for one-way controlled traffic but we caution that this has not yet been confirmed.

UPDATE 2:47 p.m.: An occupant of the Jeep was taken to Jerold Phelps Hospital.

UPDATE 2:57 p.m.: According to the California Highway Patrol Incident page, The northbound lanes are open. One of the southbound lanes is open.

UPDATE 3:17 p.m.: Power has been restored to all but 16 customers, according to PG&E.

UPDATE 3:52 p.m.: Traffic is moving fairly smoothly through the site. Here’s a photo by Alysha Valier of the downed pole and traffic puttering past it.

It’s across from Standish hickey state park. There is a big monster truck school bus and there use to be an old police car parked there too.

From what I read above, it would be very near mile marker 93.9.

It is an amazing General Store/Cafe/Music Venue/Interpretive Book Store and more. But the big question is why does Caltrans sign it as “Standish Hickey State Park” but the entrance signs to the park say “Standish Hickey State Recreation Area”? Which is it and what is the difference?

Thanks. Not sure how Standish Hickey differs from Richardson Grove or Humboldt Redwoods State Parks. Guess I will contact Park Headquarters in Eureka for their explanation.

60 years and never heard of it? Dude….you can’t miss it. The restaurant has been there for many years. It’s just past Legget when heading north on 101

The Peg House
69501 US – 101
Leggett, CA 94107

Visual clue: it’s not even 100′ off 101 in a cleared area. Note the “South Park” monster-truck style school bus parked in front of it. Stop by on your next drive.

The Peg House was built decades ago. It is the small deli the truck drivers would stop at. It is called the Peg House because it was built without nails. It is pegged together.

The four men standing around the downed pole would look a lot more useful if one of them were holding even the smallest of chainsaws.

Maybe the O’Brien Store on US199 can loan them their old police car.

Where else can you get the news and a history lessen at the same place? My daughter always stops there when she comes home for a visit. Next time I’m going to make sure she brings me some brownies!
