Major Injury Accident Temporarily Closed 101 in Northern Mendocino Today; Two Victims Medevacked
This is a press release from the California Highway Patrol. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:
On December 29, 2016, at approximately 1325 hours, a 2007 Infinity was driving southbound on US-101 south of Spy Rock Road, in Mendocino County. According to witness statements, Isidro Acosta was driving the Infinity. For reasons still under investigation, Acosta traveled into the northbound lane of traffic directly into the path of the 2011 Honda driven by P. Monahan. The two vehicles collided head on.
The collision caused major front end damage to both vehicles. Acosta was trapped inside the Infinity and required extrication by fire personnel. Acosta incurred major injuries as a result of the collision and was flown from the scene by Reach Air Ambulance. K. Monahan received major injuries and was flown from the scene by Reach Air Ambulance. P. Monahan and the juvenile received minor injuries as a result of the collision and were transported from the scene by the Laytonville Fire Department.
Acosta was subsequently arrested as a result of this collision. Intoxication due to drugs appears to be a factor in the collision. The investigation is ongoing.
US-101 was blocked, allowing for one way controlled traffic for approximately one and one half hours. The California Highway Patrol would like to thank Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office, Laytonville Fire Department, Willits Fire Department, Leggett Fire Department, Reach, Calfire and Caltrans for their assistance with the traffic collision investigation and management.
Remember to always designate a sober driver.

Don’t smoke and drive
Don’t drive distracted no matter what the source is!!!
This happens pretty often! Be alert for vehicles going outside the lines, or swerving suddenly. OH and if a car keeps slowing down or is being operated erratically, the driver probably is stoned on local product. Drivers who can’t drive should be reported via 911, please report the licence number if possible. Northern CA is full of poor drivers and drug addicts who are going, somewhere? Drive defensively, stay awake, use all your senses, and be sober! Drive first, then smoke, if you just have to… And watch out for deer, and falling trees, rocks, landslides, ice and homeless people…
And drunks smart one! If you’re so concerned about smokers, you can have the drunks, they are everywhere!
The people I have seen slowing way down and operating erratically are more likely drunk on their asses or other combination of intoxicants. Not recommending herbal medication prior to driving, I’m just sayin’. Most weedheads are not weaving and erratic. If a little herb slows your driving down, that alone might be worth it from the speed maniacs we see every day. Still, hold off until done driving is the best plan.
Was an implicating mobile device found? That ‘s a very close 2nd guess as to cause.
Here, LCO… I’ll help you stop guessing as to the cause of this senseless wreck. Dude was passing multiple vehicles in the oncoming lane over the double yellow. Repeatedly. At high speed. Very deliberately. One of those times, there was this unsuspecting car in his way with a family in it, heading back home to Trinidad after visiting loved ones in the Bay Area. No mystery. This isn’t exactly rocket science. Have a nice day

After 2000 miles of driving this New Years weekend the worst drivers I saw were texting! My wife is very fearful of other cars after being hit by two drunks. But the only cars that scared her into grabbing the dash were both texting. Pot usually makes you focus not be distracted. Driving studies has showed this also. I find there are more regular drivers that are just plain bad drivers or they are on prescription drugs than people driving poorly on pot. I drive for a living and have logged well over 1,000,000 miles in the last twenty years. The only ones I’ve ever called the cops on were people reading books and news papers while driving down the highway.
