[UPDATE 8:05 p.m.] Shooting in Eureka

Eureka Police are searching for a suspect in the shooting which occurred today at approximately 4:30 p.m. on the 1600 block of G Street in Eureka. A K-9 unit is headed into the Greenbelt. Other officers are searching in a variety of other areas.

According to scanner traffic, there is one victim with an arm wound which reportedly was caused by a shotgun. We have a reporter on the way and we’ll be updating as soon as possible.

Update 5:10 p.m.: A perimeter is being set up around these points: @ 13 & S; skate park; P st; 12th & O; 15th & K.

Update 5:30 p.m.: Photos from the scene by Stormy Widmark.

UPDATE 6:30 p.m.: Three suspects–white, black and Hispanic male adults—are being sought by Eureka Police tonight following an altercation between occupants of two adjoining Floyd Squires apartments. According to Ron Khunel a resident of the area, there had been constant problems with both places. Chief Andrew Mills confirmed there were repeated service calls from the two. Allegedly one of the suspects shot the victim with a double barreled shotgun injuring the man’s arm.

According to Chief Mills, this does not appear to be a random shooting. Residents should be cautious but EPD is not requesting them to shelter in place.

UPDATE 6:40 p.m.: All photos below by Mark McKenna.

Chief Mills talks to a resident.

EPD officers prepared to enter the residence that was the apparent scene of the shooting.

Medical personnel were cleared to come in after police secured the scene on the 1600 block of G Street in Eureka.

A young man was shot in the arm with a double-barreled shotgun on the 1600 block of G Street following a dispute between the victim who lives at one of two adjacent Floyd Squires properties and what EPD Chief Andrew Mills said were three young men at the other property. The men did not appear to be residents of the property.

Captain Steve Watson, right, points back to the area between two properties on G Street.

EPD officers began putting up crime scene tape around the two properties.

EPD Chief Andrew Mills talked with a man in the lot behind the house where the shooting occurred.

Update 8:05 p.m.:

Press release from the Eureka Police Department

On December 16, 2016, at about 4:23 p.m., officers with the Eureka Police Department responded to the 1600 block of G Street for the report of a male that had been shot. The suspects fled the scene before officers arrived.

Multiple witnesses state that three male suspects arrived at the residence and were involved in an argument. One of the males fired a shotgun and struck the male victim in the arm. The three suspects fled on foot and were last seen entering the greenbelt near 17th and J Streets. Officers searched the area extensively but were unable to locate the suspects.

The male victim was transported to the hospital and is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The suspects were described as white and Hispanic male juveniles wearing dark clothing, one armed with a shotgun. This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Eureka Police Department at (707) 441-4044.

Hard drugs, and sadly weed too. Shitty spun out parents, no free rehabs to help heroin, meth addicts. By no means am I a conservative, just seems good work ethics, manners, and a belief in a higher power are no longer taught to youth. No respect for the law or other peoples possesions. Also, no self respect!

You cant die from meth or heroin withdrawl. Let em suffer. Maybe they will actually see the error of their ways. Addicts deserve no more sympathy than pedophiles. Weve known for over a century the harmful affects of these drugs. We know they are addicting, bad and lead to shitty lives and situations and crime. You think saying ” oh geez youre withdrawling heres some free dope!” Is gonna help? Enabling 100%. No better than handing out wee children to pedophiles and expecting them to get better. Coddling people when they know they are doing wrong doesnt help. We recognize that with bratty kids but not strung out adults? Just fyi there are two drugs you can actually die from the withdrawls and thats alcohol and benzodiazapenes(spelling??). Arrest druggies. Dont give them free drugs! Stupidity. This is why it doesnt end. People have too much sympathy for these druggies.

Well, actually you *can* die from it, but all that aside, the issue is that either – in withdrawal – will commit crimes to keep from being in that state, duh.

So you get robberies, armed invasions, pot deals gone bad, etc etc.

Just saying. An ounce of prevention goes a long ways & ultimately, is far cheaper than pursuing criminals after the fact.

No you cant actually. The only drugs that the withdrawls themselves can actually kill you is benzos and alcohol.

Man i wish i had the money to buy that beautiful victorian from the pos squires and fix it up. Its a piece of art, so sad to see it under such poor stewards.
Anyone have a stat on how many times the police/fire dept are called to a squires owned property each month?? Arent property owners fined after a certain amount of calls? Or do the squires get a free pass on that like every other regulation?
I remember friends having to fight them legally back in the early 90’s, far from a new issue.

Couldn’t agree more,GF. Years back I painted Victorians in SF. That place could be a true ‘Painted Lady’ given the right owner.

I’m glad we had Gallegos for many years. His policy of letting everybody blow up weed grows and instead focusing on violent crime really had a great effect! Oh, except he let violent criminals go too? And he advertised his easy weed grow policy in the media where it got picked up nationwide and caused a local greenrush? And now things are even more violent than ever?! Well- at least we all made a bunch of money growing weed- so… Yay Gallegos!!!

How many times do we have to see Squires name attached to a story about acts of violence and other crimes? Is he blackmailing some high official? (not a fact-just pondering his outcomes). How does he get so many passes from the powers that be?

To the LAW & COURTS: WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO HOLD HIM AT LEAST PARTIALLY ACCOUNTABLE?
