Get in the Mood for Christmas by Visiting With the Spirit of Holidays Past
Press release from the Fortuna Depot Museum
The Fortuna Depot Museum invites you to come and visit the museum this holiday season, and learn how the season has been celebrated over the past century.
Exhibits feature the celebrations of Italy and Portugal, as residents of these countries comprised the majority of new immigrants to Humboldt County in 1916. One is of the exhibits is of the “presipi” which is a tiered display featuring the nativity scene. Another has “La Befana” a folk lore woman who delivers gifts to children. Also depicted is the cooking of cioppino.
Finally, using historic photos from the museum’s collection a scene from a 1914 logging camp cookhouse located in Holmes Flat, including a menu of the Thanksgiving feast served the workers, which included cigars with dessert and a description of a feast from an article in an issue of the Fortuna Advance 1914.
The museum curator, Dr. Alex Service acquired bound copies of the Fortuna Advance from 1912 to 1930 earlier this year. As this paper has not been preserved on microfilm, it is an extremely valuable resource for local history, including the description of this feast at Holmes Flat.
The Fortuna Depot Museum is open Thursday – Sunday from 12:00- 4:30.
