slide on State Route 299

The slide at Big French Creek [Photo from Caltrans earlier this year]

Hwy 299 closed this morning at Big French Creek as the slide Caltrans has been battling again covered the road. There is no estimated time of reopening as of now, according to a Caltrans source. We’ll update with more information when it comes in.

Meanwhile Hwy 20 in Lake County, Hwy 199, Hwy 36 are possible alternatives that connect with Hwy 5. Though semi drivers should consult before taking either of the latter two routes.

This is a pretty amazing slide. I’ve been driving by it since April and have seen it grow tall and wide. One time there was a excavator half way up the hill trying to knock loose material down the hill. NERVES of STEEL that operator had. Thank you to the crew that labors to keep the road open and clear…and keeping us driver safe.
