[UPDATE 11:55 a.m.] 101 Closed; Traffic Diverted to Route 271
A slide covered all four lanes of Hwy 101 between Cooks Valley and Piercy early this morning. Fortunately, Caltrans has Hwy 271 to route traffic around the slide. Plan a little extra time into your commute.
According to the California Highway Patrol Incident page, the slide is not expected to be cleared until around 2 p.m. today.
However, Caltrans reports, “Crews have been working through the night to clean up the debris, but there is no estimated time for reopening. Travelers should expect the detour to add a minor amount of time to their trip.”
UPDATE 10:33 a.m.: Talia Rose from County Line Wild sends us these photos of the slide.
UPDATE 11:55 a.m.: Caltrans posted these photos saying that delays in the area are less than 10 minutes.

4:17 pm — Friend headed south called to tell me about this. He was en route on 271 and could see the slide from the bypass, which is very close to 101. Says, “It’s not that big — it’s just a mess.” So sounds like the crews have been making progress since from Talia’s pix it looks pretty darn big to me! (Although not quite as spectacular as the slide north of Redway back in March of — 2011?)
Drive carefully, friends!
Hey Kym! I didn’t see an update that 101 was open (without bypass) again. Assume it is. Do you know? Thanks!!
