Trinity County Searchers Rescue Stranded Mushroom Hunter

Press release from the Trinity County Sheriff’s Department:

Trinity County Sheriffs Office TCSOOn Wednesday, December 7, 2016 at approximately 6:20 am a family member of Rayona Scott called the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center to report that Ms. Scott had hiked into the Six Rivers National Forest North of Trinity Village in Hawkins Bar to pick mushrooms on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 and had not returned home yet. Ms. Scott was supposed to call someone to pick her up or be picked up the night of December 6, 2016. Her family had not heard from her and it was not her usual practice to stay out overnight.

The Trinity County Sheriff’s Deputies as well as Trinity County Search and Rescue members and the United States Forest Service Fire Crews responded to the area where Rayona Scott was reported to be picking mushrooms. At approximately 2:30 pm Ms. Scott was located by searchers South of Forest Road 8N02 near the Hawkins Creek drainage. Ms. Scott had slipped into a creek drainage and was yelling for help. USFS Fire Crews bundled up Ms. Scott and carried her through the steep terrain to the awaiting ambulance that transported her to a nearby hospital to be treated for mild hypothermic issues.

3rd mushroom hunter to go missing, thank goodness they all have been found, Matsutakes are poppin up just got a nice bag full, be safe out there folks!

Wow I have been picking in all terrain for years. Key point here know your surrounding and time of departure to get back, beside your ability. Glad she is alright. Have a partner with you. This is not rocket science people. Hellllllllllllllllllloooooooo.

Not sure if they are applicable in forested areas, but they make PLB’s. These are Personal Location Beacons that when activated, contacts Coast Guard and they contact any phone number associated with the device. It will instantly start a search and rescue operation. I carry one with me when I’m fishing by myself.

Yes I agree, Ive heard satellite phones are good too, I carry a transponder when I’m out in the woods or anywhere rural, I got the SpotGen3 but just upgraded to the DeLorme inReachSE
