South Fork High’s Varsity boys’ basketball team got its first win against Elsie Allen on Thursday night in Kelseyville during tournament play. The Cubs, a Division 6 school, squeaked by the much bigger Division 3 school 42-40 in what head coach Todd Vandenack called a “great defensive battle.” Crediting the whole squad with outstanding team defense the young Cubs were pleased to get on the winners’ side of the bracket in a tournament that features several larger schools.

Junior Scott Coffelt led all scorers with 13, Junior Roberto Navarrete and sophomore CJ Van Meter had 7 each, sophomore Cody Wyatt had 6 and senior Justin Michael made  a free throw.

In round 2, the Cubs ran into a very deep and polished Kelseyville team who beat them 67-30. “They played a very tough 2-3 match-up zone defense that we just couldn’t figure out,” said Vadenack. Van Meter had 9 points, Coffelt scored 6, Wyatt had 5, sophomore Cooper Scott had 4, junior Ryder Pfau had 3, and seniors Javier Alatorre and Justin Michael each had a bucket.

Playing for third place in the final round of the tournament, South Fork faced Rancho Cotate, another Division 3 team and lost 63-57. The officials took control of the game early and both teams ended up in double bonus before the end of the first quarter. Hampered by foul trouble throughout the game with three Cubs eventually fouling out, South Fork could not get a rhythm going. However, despite being down 63-41 at the end of the third quarter, the Cubs held Rancho Cotate scoreless in final period, and mounted a comeback to bring them within 6 points by the final buzzer. Coffelt had 16 points, Alatorre had 10, Van Meter had 9, Navarrete had 7, junior Jesseey Rolff had 5, Pfau had 4, Scott had 3, Wyatt had 2 and Michael made a free throw.

CJ Van Meter was named all-tourney for South Fork.

Earlier in the week the Cubs lost 62-43 to Laytonville on Tuesday on the road. Two players scored over 20 points apiece for Laytonville and South Fork could not find a way to contain both of them.

“We had a low shooting percentage and did not convert the turnovers we caused with our press,” said Vandenack of the disappointing loss. The Cubs are still working out the kinks of the new system they are learning, but the coach is confident that progress is being made and the players understand what they need to work on.

South Fork’s record now stands at 1-4 on the young season as they go into a promising week of competition against schools of mostly their own Division 6 size. Playing at Round Valley on Monday with an 8:00 pm tip-off and hosting their first home game of the season Tuesday in Miranda with a 7:30 pm tip-off against Potter Valley will start the week, and then they will travel to the Calistoga tournament where all of their opponents will be either Division 5 or 6 schools.

“This will be a big week for us,” said Vandenack.
