Southern Humboldt Football Team May Have to Shut Down

2016 Southern Humboldt BulldogsThe Bulldogs, a Southern Humboldt Youth Football and Cheer team will be discontinued and the kids will be unable to participate in 2017 if adults don’t step up to the plate by December 12 , says Melissa McConnell who is vice president of the board.

McConnell explained that the board is having trouble recruiting people to fill positions that keep the team functioning. Describing this next week as “one final attempt to save our Bulldogs,” McConnell said that there would be no 2017 Bulldogs without some adult volunteers.

“If we don’t have a board, we don’t have a league,” she said. “We have made several attempts to recruit members to fill positions, but to our disappointment there are no volunteers. This means all Bulldog accounts…will be frozen indefinitely.”

These are the positions that are available:
President
Vice President
Secretary
Treasure
Cheer Coordinator
Snack Shack Coordinator
Fundraising Coordinator
Parliamentarian
Equipment Manager
Field Mana

If you have any suggestions or can help, please contact McConnell at (707) 223-0383 or President Renae Rowton-Wade (707) 502-9642.

We haven’t been able to make full teams the last 2 years. A huge handful of kids are actually sponsored due to the cost of this sport.

So sad. I remember playing/cheering against the Bulldogs back in my day and I think cheer and football shouldn’t be phased out down there. Seems to me like sometimes Southern Humboldt gets forgotten about when it comes to school amd sports. Wish I could volunteer my time but my work schedule would probably conflict too much.

The issue is….A lot of parents are turning their kids to soccer. Football is phasing out. We need motivated parents that are passionate about football and are willing to volunteer their time.

Or promote soccer to the kids instead. Good idea for a lot of reasons.

https://www.minnpost.com/second-opinion/2015/01/children-football-and-long-term-effects-brain-injuries-new-troubling-findings

“If the mounting scientific evidence about the long-term risks of playing football (no matter what protective gear is worn) isn’t enough to dissuade parents from letting their children onto the field, perhaps the words of former Chicago Bears head coach Mike Ditka will be. When asked earlier this month if he would let an 8-year-old son of his today play football, he quickly said no.

“I think the risk is worse than the reward,” he said. “I really do.””

Yep.

http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2015/01/28/youth-football-linked-to-long-term-brain-damage-in-nfl-players

‘Former NFL players who played tackle football before age 12 appear “significantly” more likely to suffer memory loss and mental health issues than those who begin playing later, according to a new study published in the run up to the Super Bowl.

Researchers from Boston University tested the memory, mental flexibility and verbal intelligence of 42 former pro football players. Half began tackle play when they were younger than 12 years old, the other half when they were 12 or older.

Those who started earlier, the study found, “performed significantly worse on all test measures, even after researchers took into account the total number of years of football played and the age of the players at the time of the tests.”

On some tests, the two groups differed by as much as 20 percent.

“We were struck by how robust the findings were,” says study co-author Robert Stern, professor of neurology, neurosurgery and anatomy and neurobiology at the Boston University School of Medicine. “I expected there to be something. But I was struck by how strong and consistent the findings were.”

What about starting a flag food league in Humboldt county? With the inherent risk of concussions flag football is growing in popularity. It’s being promoted by the NFL. Go to: http://www.nflflag.com
