A person fell over the cliff near Trinidad about 1:44 p.m., according to Laura Coleman spokesperson for Cal Fire. “There was a language barrier,” she explained, so it has been difficult to communicate with the person reporting. However, she explained, “We believe that one male fell…Possibly a 300 meter fall…There is a confirmed broken leg.” There may be more injuries.

Cal Fire is responding with a helicopter. “The Coast Guard [helicopter] is also rolling,” Coleman said. There is an engine out of Trinidad and Westhaven Fire. Inmate crews from Alder Camp are on their way also.

“It sounds like it is going to be a rescue,” Coleman said. “It could be with a Stokes [basket.]

We’ll update as more information comes in.

UPDATE 5:47 p.m.: According to US Coast Guard Petty Officer Third Class, Christina Emerson, “[The man] was recovered from the beach and taken to St. Joe’s Hospital.”

UPDATE 11:09 p.m.: The Coast Guard released this video of the injured man being hoisted from the beach where he fell near Trinidad earlier today.

300 meters equals 984.25 American feet, that hardly seems possible. Could I be wrong again?
I hope he is okay.

Ernie, I stand corrected. Believe you’re right ! 39 plus inches to a meter. How he survived is a miracle unless he slid down instead of rolled ?

I think 300 meters is a little off. That’s like falling 1000 feet

Maybe they meant 30 meters which is closer to 100 ft.

Glad everyone is ok. There is a trail down from one of the houses but the guy who lives there would rather call Sheriff rather than help

Don’t be mean. You don’t know his capabilities, and of course he notified emergency services. Thank you! They have expert knowledge and resources.

I’m with you Cheri, call then see if help can be rendered. Valuable time is wasted, and 2 might need rescue.

It doesn’t say how steep it is either. Makes a difference fall vertically vs sliding, both are falling.

Let’s not forget the firefighters and volunteers who actually climbed down the cliff that the victim fell off to treat the patient and had to get back up again. It was brutal.
