South Fork High School’s girls basketball teams were busy last week, with Varsity playing a close game but losing to Laytonville on Tuesday and then traveling to Kelseyville for a three game tourney in which they lost the first two games, but pulled out an exciting 45-42 overtime win over local rival Ferndale.

The JVs played in a tourney in Eureka and lost all three games, but continue to improve playing as a team with all freshman on the roster in a JV competition.

Varsity head coach Shylo Wantt was delighted with her squad’s performance against Ferndale: “We played awesome defense and really attacked the hoop.” The thrilling victory gave the Lady Cubs their first win of the season, bringing their record to 1-4. “I’m very proud of these girls,” Wantt added.

Two Lady Cubs sophomores scored 9 points each to lead the team in scoring: Haylie Mulder had 4 buckets and made a free throw and Kylie Messenger had three 2-pointers and one 3-pointer. Sophomore Regina Salomon scored 8 points, with 3 buckets, and she was 2 for 2 from the free throw line. Seniors Shondra Moser and Noelia Alatorre had 7 points each and were a combined 6 for 9 from the free throw line. Junior Iscley Blaine had 5 points.

Down by a point going into the 4th quarter, Messenger hit a 3-pointer and Alatorre, Moser and Mulder each made a free throw to outscore Ferndale in the quarter and knot the game at 40 at the end of regulation. In over-time Messenger made a basket and Blaine hit a 3-pointer while the Lady Cubs’ defense held Ferndale to just 2 points in the period to hang on for the 45-42 win.

Prior to the win the Cubs had fallen to Orland 53-20 in Thursday night’s opener and then lost a close game to St. Helena on Friday, details unavailable, to put them in the 7th place game on Saturday.

Prior to the tourney, the Lady Cubs fell to Laytonville on the road last Tuesday.

This week the Lady Cubs will travel to Round Valley for a 6:30 tip-off on Monday, and then will host their first home game of the season against Potter Valley on Tuesday with a 6:00 p.m. tip-off in Miranda. They will take Wednesday off and then travel to Calistoga for another three-day tourney, times and opponents to be announced.

The JVs are now 0-5 on the season, but the entirely freshman squad continues to gain valuable experience that will pay off in the long run. Head coach Thomas Mulder was pleased with how the team’s offense is progressing, but sees the transition defense as needing improvement.

Mulder said “Mirna (Navarrete) played exceptionally well and would have been named to an all -tourney team if there had been one.” He was also pleased with Shaylaray Bilandzija’s and Miranda Femenella’s strong play.

The JVs will travel to Round Valley on Manday for a 3:30 tip off and then will play in Fortuna’s JV tourney this weekend.

It will be fun to see these girls improving as the season progresses.
