After a disappointing loss to Laytonville last Tuesday, South Fork High’s JV boys’ basketball team bounced back with an impressive performance at the annual Potter Valley tournament, getting their first two wins of the season to reach the championship game and then taking second place after losing to a strong Ferndale team in the final.

The Cubs opened the tourney with a decisive 63-33 win over Point Arena. Freshman Banyan Harding led all scorers with 19, followed closely by freshman Austin Worrell with 17, who was also “a beast on the boards,” according to head coach Brett Van Meter. Sophomore Ayden Gallagher played point guard much of the game and contributed 3 points while playing “inspired defense”. Junior Chris Arbuthnot hit 2 three-pointers and had 8 total points.

Van Meter called the 46-37 win over round 2 opponent Rincon Valley “the most complete game we’ve played this season.” Knowing that Rincon Valley was a quality side, the coaches’ message to the players “was to play our A game and take care of the ball. We responded to the challenge very well.”

Freshman Jayden Paine ran the offense, scoring 15 points of his own, and played outstanding defense. Harding had 19 points, Worrell had 8 and Arbuthnot had five. The Cubs took the lead early and never looked back.

In the final the JVs ran into a very strong Ferndale team and lost 51-27. “After a slow start we clawed our way back into this in the second quarter, but they had more fire power and we ran out of gas,” said Coach Van Meter. He added that he was proud of the team for playing hard to the end. Harding had 11 points, Paine 8. Austin Worrell continues to improve, bringing a nice touch to his shot and a strong presence on the boards.

Earlier in the week the Cubs lost a game they felt they could have won, falling to Laytonville on the road 46-40. “We learned a lot,” said Van Meter, “We had a lot of chances to win this game, but turnovers and lack of focus on defense cost us.” Harding had 23 points, Worrell added 6 and Paine had five.

This week the JVs will travel to Round Valley on Monday for a 5 p.m. tip-off and then host Potter Valley on Tuesday with a 6:00 pm tip-off in Miranda. They will travel to Calistoga Thursday through Saturday for another tournament, times and opponents to be announced.

Kim Thank you for letting the SFHS report their sports standings, the kids love to read about their game and see their team talked about in a positive light.
Please support all of our children in their desires weather it be sports, theater or anything else that they want to do! This gives them support and drive to create a good life for themselves.
