A 68-year-old male cut off his fingers with some sort of mechanical saw near Miranda, according to scanner traffic at 10:58 a.m. An ambulance is on its way to the address which is located in the 6800 block of the Avenue of the Giants across from the South Fork High School.

UPDATE Tuesday: We had a report from Bernie Korbly’s daughter that his fingers were not severed. “They were all still attached and he had surgery on one that was cut deep.” She said she picked him up from St. Joseph’s Hospital today and “he is doing good!”

First aid for severed fingers, besides all the standard stuff like make sure the scene is safe, turn the offending tool, check for other injuries and vital signs, and stop the bleeding, Then put the severed part in a paper towel or sanitary cloth, like gauze. Then put it into a ziplock bag or jar, then place it in ice water.

A chilled finger or toe will last up to 18 hours if properly chilled. It will last only 4-6 hours without being chilled, depending on the temperature. Chilling is proper to save ANY body part for reattachment.

Don’t forget to have someone drive you right past the Pherold Gelps Scown Mortuary straight to a qualified hospital or you could lose your bagged finger to administrative bloat.

That’s called “gallows humor”. Most of us keep it behind our hands. Good one!

I saw this post before any comments. My mind then offered a string of puns and ‘gallows humor’ suggestions to offer. But somehow, knowing this is serious, I took the higher road, and not the digit-al highway.

Fingers, always amazed me that you could get more than one, but it happens all the time.
