[UPDATE: Tuesday] Suddenlink Outage in Humboldt County

Multiple readers are reporting they are unable to access Suddenlink in the Rio Dell and Scotia area. This outage appears to have begun about 9:30 this morning. Down Detector’s map shows there are problems in the Eureka area. We’re attempting to get more information.

UPDATE: Online scanner traffic is down for Humboldt.

UPDATE 1:15 p.m.: According to a Suddenlink service technician, “We’re working on a broken fiber cable.” However, they don’t as yet have the cause of the break nor an estimated time for the outage to be fixed.

UPDATE 4:40 p.m.: According to Suddenlink’s tweet to California Senator Mike McGuire,

During a storm, a fallen tree took down utility lines, including our fiber lines. We are working in coordination with the power company crews, who must restore service before our technicians can safely complete our portion of the restoration.

UPDATE Tuesday: Suddenlink has repaired their cable and customers should be able to access their services. The Lost Coast Outpost has more information here.

If it is a fiber connection broken, and AT&T works (T-Mobile, Metro PCS, etc), then it is a problem with the newer PG&E trunk line that crosses the 36 area. This tells us that Suddenlink dropped using the AT&T trunk line that follows 101, thus no longer has the redundancy the newer trunk line was built for. Bad move, Suddenlink. Verizon also only uses the newer trunk line instead of both, where the cell services that still work use the older trunk line, and have outages when that line is damaged. Still, any service that doesn’t use both is a bad service.

According to Suddenlink, the storms earlier today caused trees to fall just south of Eureka and take out power lines and their lines. Crews are working on it. No update since 2:30pm.

It’s a good moment to take advantage of quality family time. Put down the electronics and actually talk to each other and listen to the football game on the radio

SuddenLink everything down all day in Fortuna. Verizon wireless home phone and cell phones out all day in Fortuna… Failed calls cannot relay roaming. US Cellular out but called 6-1-1 to see what their C.S. knew…Sprint Sales answered?..

Why are phone companies not using the redundancy trunk line?
After all the amazing work that was done to bring in the second back-up line?
What’s up with that?
