Woman Rescued by Coast Guard From Eel River Sandbar Late Last Night
A Myers Flat woman went to the Eel River to bathe last night and was swept away. She managed to scramble onto a sandbar and call for assistance from a cell phone. Paula Sue Darling called 911 about 9:45 p.m., according to Sgt. Ken Swithenbank of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office.
The Coast Guard was notified and responded with a helicopter. Numerous residents of Myers Flat saw the helicopter fly over with a light searching the area about 11:45 p.m. Some noted that a Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputy was at the scene.
Petty Officer Nick Ramirez of the Coast Guard explained that his agency was notified about 10:25 p.m. of the situation. They were able to respond to the area and land on the sandbar which held Darling around midnight. “They transported her to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Eureka,” he said. “She was hypothermic and dehydrated.”
She is expected to recover.

Thank God she bathes with her cell phone!
No kidding, but who pays the hospital bill?
Obamacare health plan policies go up because she can’t pay.
If she can’t pay, why is there an obligation to assist her without forcing her to pay or work off the costs of servicing her idiocy?
Because we are living in a society. Its a social contract that we help those in need, not just for their benefit, but for our own.
Correction – Living in a forced society, forced market economy…..not a free market economy unless we are “her”.
Rambunctious lifestyles versus accident versus mother nature…..
She should pay for 100% of all costs or work it off swap, chain gang style for the service.
Did she not enter the water to bathe, rather than to bath?
Yep. Fixed
After all the rain wasn’t the water a bit muddy for bathing?
I was thinking the same thing liz. I’d imagine it is insanely muddy right now.
Bathe? It was cold as fxxk at 945 last night
IN the river and dehydrated. If there was only something nearby to help with that.
HA!
stupid!!!!!
Wonder what that idiocy ended up costing us?
I wonder if she is an actual resident of Myers Flat or one of the current hoarde of invading trimmer hopefuls. No one who really lives here would be in the river IMO
A quick google search of her name reveals she doesn’t make the best life decisions and is most likely local.
Quick Search,You are very right about that. So Veterans Friend, yes she has been a long time Humboldt county resident. Born here I’m pretty sure. Just another one of ‘those’ events in her life.
Exactly, is she an outsider pos here to trim weed? Some local groveler type?
She is fortunate not to be another drowning victim, then again, maybe this was all a set up for getting admitted for a warm shower, bed, food, etc…..scam artist???
Spot on Veterans Friend
Darwin cheated out of another award
The fire departments use practice dummies for rescue drills. The Coasties get to use REAL dummies.
Don’t begrudge the expense of having the Coast Guard rescue this woman. It’s a real life drill for when they have to rescue YOU.
Thank you Coast Guard.
Thanks Ernie for the positive thought, & thank you Coast Guard for being there.
What VHDA said!
This makes no sense. So, she was bathing, gets swept away, swims to gravel bar and has her cell phone in hand and it still worked?? Was she bathing with the cell phone? Nude photos maybe? Water proof phone?
Maybe it was “Tucked” in there somewhere.
Maybe her cell phone was made of soap??
Too bad it wasn’t a Samsung 7, she could’ve started a fire to keep her self warm.
Lmao!
Yuck!!
tweaking
Still wondering why she did this in the dark?no sense or high??nasty or sinister??or all of the above!sorry lol
Maybe she pissed her pants, wanted to wash body and clothes simultaneously…..or, maybe a poop in the water too……although no baby ruth was found floating by Bill Murray……so no old elitist woman fainted, shucks….
Had enough of people like you on earth
Gosh – I did something like that when I was in my 20’s, but it was daytime and at the beach – thought I was all good swimming in the ocean, but hypothermia crept up on me and the next thing I knew, some surfer was grabbing me and guiding me back to the beach…..I’d almost washed into a pier! I was totally out of it, and if he hadn’t spotted me I’d have simply washed away….
If she hadn’t had a phone, who knows? Expensive, yes, but good practice for the Coasties! ;^p
Hope the fish are OK.
