South Fork’s varsity football team may have fallen by the wide margin of 41-6 to league leading St. Bernard’s last Friday night in the rain in Miranda, but the Cubs hung with the powerhouse for a quarter, and wanted to keep playing even though they were down to just 11 players at half time.

South Fork earned bragging rights by picking off Crusader Quarterback Jack Rice for just the second time all season and scoring early when the St. Bernard’s starters were still on the field.

It was sophomore defensive linebacker Cody Wyatt who made a diving catch for the interception in the first quarter when the Cubs were already down 14-0. While the Cubs didn’t score on the ensuing drive, the play stopped the Crusader momentum and South Fork was able to get into the endzone on their next possession.

Three consecutive big plays set up the touchdown. Junior quarterback Scott Coffelt (filling in for the injured CJ Van Meter) connected with Wyatt for a 20 yard gain. Senior running back Ipo Savoie got the ball next and took it twenty yards further, and then junior running back Gabe Malley ran the ball another 20 yards to bring the Cubs to the St. Bernard’s 12 yard line. Coffelt threw a perfect pass into good coverage and Wyatt hit the ground again to make his second diving catch of the evening for the score.

“We have competitive moments in every game,” said head coach Andy Olsen, “but with so few kids on the roster we get worn down.” St Bernard’s has 30 players on their roster and a steady supply of fresh legs, a luxury the Cubs hope to experience when they move to the 8-man format next season.

Olsen had praise for several defenders in the game. Savoie and junior linebacker Aaron Etherton had ten tackles apiece and sophomore Dusty Rodas improves every week, getting in on a couple tackles, getting her second solo tackle of the season.

He was also pleased with the performance of junior center Brad Coffelt who snapped the wet ball well when the Cubs were in the shotgun formation.

Coffelt was 5 for 11 passing for 40 yards and Van Meter came in late, going 2 for 3 for 25 yards.

Savoie led the rushing attack, carrying the ball 7 times for 28 yards. Wyatt had 3 receptions for 28 yards and junior wide receiver Ryder Pfau had 4 receptions for 37 yards.

Next week the Cubs will host their final home game of the season as Ferndale rolls into town for a 7 p.m. kick off on Friday in Miranda. When the teams matched up three weeks ago the Cubs lost 41-13 in Ferndale. “We’re glad to be playing a team with a small roster like ours,” said Olsen. The Cubs will spend the week recovering from injuries and going light in practice to stay as healthy as possible for the week 8 game.

The team’s three seniors will be honored as they play their final home game: running back/linebacker Ipo Savoie, and linemen Joseph Peralta and Justin Michael will all be graduating in June.

Seems to me that van meter kid did good at home coming. Bounced a lot of passes off of receivers chests. Very small receivers also. Just a spectator. But I did watch the game.
