First Storm Coming Early Tomorrow

Stormy Weather by Kym kempThe first good sized storm of the season should begin in the early morning hours tomorrow. “Rain will become heavy at times and it will get windy,” explained Robert Ruehl, of the US National Weather Service in Eureka. “But we’re not talking about the end of civilization as we know it.”

Three to four inches of rain are expected to fall over Humboldt between Thursday and Saturday, Ruehl said. Del Norte will see slightly more and Mendocino slightly less. Streets could have some ponding as a result so make sure to drive cautiously.

The mountaintops could have 50 to 70 mph winds but, Ruehl said, “Along the coast we’ll see gusts to about 30 mph.” Batten down all tarps and patio furniture.

The main concern, Ruehl said, is that “beaches will have really high surf.” Later in the season, shoals will form off the beach and waves will break further out. But, “These are the first big swells of the season. Now [the waves] might break right on the beach.” Ruehl said the coastline will likely be dangerous. “People should avoid going to the beach and to the jetties,” he said. “If they do go, they should be very cautious.”

You know some knucklehead’s going out to the jetty to take videos of big surf, will get washed off into the sea and we’ll have to pay for the rescue.
