South Fork High School’s varsity football team played Ferndale in the Humboldt Del Norte Little Four Conference season opener last Saturday and lost 41-13.

“It felt good to play someone our own size,” said head coach Andy Olsen, referring to the considerable discrepancy in roster size faced in South Fork’s first four non-league opponents. “We hung with them for awhile,” he added, noting that the score was 20-6 at the half.

South Fork scored touchdowns in the 2nd and 4th quarters. The first score came after a 68 yard pass play from sophomore quarterback CJ Van Meter to junior wide receiver Ryder Pfau. “Ryder really showed his speed on that play,” said Olsen. Catching the ball behind the line of scrimmage, Pfau got two good blocks from juniors Gabe Malley and Scott Coffelt as he streaked down the sideline for the big gain. Finally pushed out of bounds at the Ferndale 7 yard line, the Cubs got the ball into the endzone after a 6.5 yard run by senior Ipo Savoie and a quarterback sneak by Coffelt. The two-point conversion try was not successful.

South Fork’s second touchdown came at the very end of the game on two passes from Van Meter to Coffelt. Coffelt kicked the extra point.

Van Meter had his best passing performance of the season, going 6 for 15 for 132 yards. “He is very mature for a guy making only his 6th appearance at varsity quarterback.”

Coffelt carried the ball 13 times for 54 yards and the Cubs gained 228 total yards with a total of 10 first downs. They had 3  turnovers which likely cost them some points.

Olsen was impressed with junior Aaron Etherton and Savoie’s dominance on defense. Etherton was in on 15 tackles while Savoie participated in ten. Coffelt had 7 solo tackles and assisted on 6 more.

Junior Brad Kloiber was moved to linebacker for the first time this season and performed well. “He’s getting more aggressive every week,” said Olsen. Sophomore Dylan Music continues to improve on the line.

This week South Fork will host Hoopa Valley for Homecoming with a 7:30 p.m. kick-off Friday in Miranda. Hoopa lost to St. Bernard’s 56-12 last weekend and Olsen feels the Cubs may have a shot at their fist victory of the season. “This should be an even match-up,” he said, noting that he will be preparing for Hoopa’s strong senior running back Robert Masten who has “scored most of their touchdowns this year.”
