Southern Humboldt Unified School District Board Urges Residents to Vote for Prop. 55

Press release:

The Southern Humboldt Unified School District (SHUSD)The Southern Humboldt Unified School District (SHUSD) Board of Trustees endorsed Proposition 55 at its June 9th board meeting to send a message to local voters and state legislators about the importance of restoring school funding that was cut during the recession of 2007-2012.

Voting yes on Proposition 55 would protect funding for local schools by extending the personal income tax increases on individuals who earn more than $250,000 annually and using those revenues to fund K-12 education. This initiative originally passed in 2012 under Proposition 30, but the funding is scheduled to be phased out in 2018.

“California currently ranks 42nd in the nation in funding per student. If Proposition 55 doesn’t pass, we’ll see more cuts—and we really can’t afford more cuts,” said SHUSD Board of Trustee President, Dennis O’Sullivan. Proposition 55 is estimated to provide between $4 billion and $9 billion in additional state revenues annually.

Superintendent Catherine Scott explained, “We are still in the process of restoring basic programs cut during the recession. Proposition 55 would extend the income tax increase through the year 2030 for the 1.5 percent of Californians who make more than $250,000. Having a dependable source of funding enables us to plan appropriately and provide our students with the educational resources they deserve.”

In addition to voting in favor of Proposition 55, Scott encouraged SHUSD families to complete the free and reduced lunch forms, if they qualify. She explained that schools receive state and federal funding based on daily student attendance. If students qualify for free or reduced lunches, the allocation increases and SHUSD is able to provide more services. “Families can pick up forms in their school offices or they can contact the district office and we’ll mail them the forms,” Scott said.

I know it makes me sick I’m all for school funding we need it desperately, but every time taxes are raised it goes somewhere else pisses me off to the point I won’t vote for any new taxes unless it goes directly to the schools which seems will never happen

Correct. There’s a pie chart in the window of the Mendo Tax Collector to show where your property tax money goes. 60% to local schools. 8% to public safety. We’re actually paying for a Junior College campus in Garberville that’s non-existent. That’s another assessment other than the regular property tax. Vote NO! Enough is enough.

Ever since the measure z burn I’m not voting for any more taxes. I’m already paying an extra $800 in special taxes every year as it is.

So we can’t afford to fund our educational system as is, but we can afford to let millions of children from other countries that are here illegally go to our schools for free. Well no we can’t afford that ether but it’s okay because we’ll just get the legal citizen to pay for it. And before you call me racist I would like to point out I made no mention of race nor do I care what color you are. If your here illegally you are breaking the law regardless of what country you come from.

This tax was supposed to be temporary. When is enough, enough? I think I’ll vote to keep it temporary. No on 55.
