Southern Humboldt Unified School District Asks for Help Deciding How to Spend LCFF Funding

SFHSPress release from the Southern Humboldt Unified School District:

Southern Humboldt Unified School District (SHUSD) invites families of SHUSD students to participate in town hall meetings to share ideas about how best to spend limited school funding. The meetings will be held regionally to discuss each of the SHUSD schools.

Town Hall Schedule

  • October 3 at 5:00 PM at Casterlin Elementary to discuss Casterlin and South Fork High School (SFHS);
  • October 17 at 6:00 PM at Redway Elementary to discuss Redway and Whitehorn Elementary; and
  • October 24 at 5:30 PM at South Fork High School to discuss SFHS, Miranda Jr High, and Agnes J. Johnson Elementary.

SHUSD Superintendent Catherine Scott said, “At last year’s town hall meetings, the most common request was for smaller class sizes, so that’s what we’ve created wherever possible. Although the State sets the priority areas, we have a lot of influence over how to support and implement those priorities.”
In 2013, the State changed the way it funds education. It began requiring school districts to submit Local Control and Accountability Plans (LCAP) to demonstrate how they will comply with state standards and the following educational priorities:
1.     Student Achievement
2.     Student Engagement
3.     School Climate
4.     Basic Services
5.     Implementation of Common Core State Standards
6.     Course Access
7.     Parental Involvement
8.     Other Student Outcomes

The SHUSD plan will have at least one goal to address each of these eight areas.

School districts receive funding based on the demographic profile of the students they serve and in rural districts like SHUSD, meeting the needs of local kids often requires creative problem solving.

“We have excellent teachers and some wonderfully engaged families who work with us to come up with programs to address a broad range of educational levels and meet the needs of students,” Scott said.

She used the example of the new English/Language Arts curriculum piloted last year and implemented this year under the “Student Engagement” priority. The program is called National Geographic Reach, and it uses interactive materials to bring subjects to life. “During the pilot, several students gained a full grade level in reading comprehension within months of using this curriculum,” Scott said.

Scott invited parents interested in volunteering to be a part of the LCAP Parent Advisory Committee. Members of this group will attend one of the town hall meetings to listen to parent/guardian input, and then ultimately review and recommend the final version of the plan to the SHUSD Board of Trustees.

“We are hoping volunteers will commit to be a part of this committee for at least two years,” Scott said.
Those interested in participating on the LCAP Parent Advisory Committee should contact Vanessa at the district office at (707) 943-1789.

If you don’t speak, write, read and comprehend English. Everything else will end up in failure. Before kids leave 2nd grade or before The kid is lost from this point on. Read to your kids from the time they’re babies. They get it you may feel its a waste of time but it’s the most important thing you will ever do for your child, other than showing them respect and true unconditional love.
