Time to Talk Taxes (Want to Postpone? There Might Be a Way)

Press release from Humboldt County:

Humboldt CountyProperty tax bills for the current year will be mailed by the end of September.

The first installment of Humboldt County Property Taxes is due November 1 and MUST be paid by Monday, December 12, 2016 in order to be considered timely. Payments received after that date will result in a 10% penalty. If mailing, make sure your payment is postmarked by December 12th or else you will be penalized.

The second installment will be due February 1 and MUST be paid by Monday, April 10, 2017 in order to be considered timely. Payments received after that date will result in a 10% penalty and a $ 20 fee. If mailing, make sure your payment is postmarked by April 10th or else you will be penalized.

We urge anyone having questions regarding payment to first look at your tax bill, front and back, or check out the website http://humboldtgov.org/tax as almost all answers can be found in one of these two places. If you don’t find your answer then call us, or the Assessor, or the Auditor (depending on your question) at 707-441-3020.

Online payments can be made at the website http://humboldtgov.org/tax or at the Tax Collector’s office where we also accept debit card, credit card, and e-check payments. This added convenience does involve processing by private companies so there is a service fee charged by these outside contractors (not by Humboldt County). You may also make debit and credit card payments over the phone by calling (877) 486-7163….and yes, the same service fees apply.

There are also secure tax payment boxes just inside the Courthouse (before the security check-points) at both the 4th and 5th Street entrances. Keep in mind that the Courthouse closes at 5:00.

The Tax Collector’s Office will be very busy through December 12th. So if you wish to pay in person you will not only need to go through Courthouse security screening but may also have to wait in line once you get to the Tax Collector’s office. Mailing your payment early will be less of a hassle.——————

Humboldt CountyThe Humboldt County Treasurer-Tax Collector is pleased to announce that the State Controller’s Property Tax Postponement Program has returned after being suspended by the State Legislature in 2009. The program allows homeowners who are 62 or older, blind, or have a disability, to defer current-year property taxes on their principal residence if they meet certain criteria including 40 percent equity in the home and an annual household income of $35,500 or less. Applications became available September 1, 2016 and can be found online at http://www.sco.ca.gov/ardtax_prop_tax_postponement.html

The State Controller’s Office will begin accepting applications on October 1, 2016 through February 10, 2017. Funds are limited and applications will be approved on a first come, first serve basis.

The interest rate for taxes postponed is 7% per year as compared to 18% per year for delinquent taxes. Repayment under this program becomes due when the homeowner:
• Moves or sells the property;
• Transfers title;
• Defaults on a Senior lien;
• Refinances; Dies; or
• Chooses to obtain a reverse mortgage.

For more detailed program information, contact the Tax-Collector’s office at 707-476-2450 or email [email protected], or the State Controller’s Office toll-free at (800) 952-5661 or email [email protected].

Thanks for the nitty gritty details.

I was hoping this would be an article on the huge sales tax in all the communities and county.

I am very disturbed at the trend to address budgetary concerns with a “minor and limited time” sales tax initiatives.

It would be great to see some sort of chart or graphic on the sales taxes in Humboldt County.

I would also like to see the data on the various bonds that have been passed and the proposed bonds slated for this election cycle.

Taxation is slavery, anyone making a living from tax collection will be thrown into the lake of fire to burn for eternity.
Repent now or burn in hell.

Over 4 million Americans are making a living off our taxes now and that doesn’t include the 96+ million people getting government subsidies. Or the “undocumented people”

How about a Trump lifetime postponement? Where do we sign up for that?
