On Sunday, August 7, 2016, a 2013 Hyundai Elantra was traveling on SR-299 westbound, east of Blue Lake, when it drove off the roadway and collided into a rock embankment.

[A]t approximately 2222 hours, CHP officers responded to [the] traffic collision on SR-299, east of milepost marker 12.5… As a result of this collision, [Andrew John Schwartz, age 30] and his passenger, Miranda Kayleen Willet (who was not wearing a seatbelt), age 21, of Rio Dell, sustained major injuries.  They were transported by ambulance to Mad River Community Hospital in Arcata.  Drugs are suspected to have been a factor in this collision and Schwartz was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence.

The California Highway Patrol would like to take this unfortunate opportunity to remind motorist that seat belts save lives and prevent injuries. Do not put your own life at risk, or the life of your family or friends. Buckle up.
