Press release from the California Highway Patrol:
[A Gasquet resident] was traveling northbound on US-199 at an unknown speed. For unknown reasons [she] traveled into the parking lot just south of the Mary Peacock Bridge [on Hwy 199.] [She] traveled through the parking lot, in a northbound direction before exiting the asphalt and traveling down the embankment and overturning several times before coming to rest at the edge of the Smith River.
[She] succumbed to her injuries at the scene of the collision. Nothing was noted to have entered the water. The driver was a solo occupant of the vehicle. At this time, the name of the party will not be released until next of kin can be found and notified.
