Today’s I Am Humboldt features Thomas, a local man who overcame homelessness and addiction, to now working towards his MA in English.
“I came to Humboldt by way of Mission Teens, Inc. in 2007. In 2009 Mike and Sandy Dunker offered to help me rebuild a life from scratch. I enrolled at College of the Redwoods and began classes in the spring semester of 2010. I now have a BA in English from Humboldt State University and am currently working toward an MA in English: Composition Studies & Pedagogy. I also work as a Peer Writing Consultant in the HSU’s Writing Studio. My ultimate goal is to be able to sustain myself writing, and my preferred genre is horror–with Lovecraftian horror at the apex. Humboldt County is a beautiful place with beautiful people, and without some of those beautiful people, I would not have been able to accomplish what I have accomplished this far.” – Thomas
The I Am Humboldt crew is always looking for new faces to photograph and stories to tell. Know someone with a positive tale to tell? Please message them on their page.

I remember Thomas from College of the Redwoods. I worked at the library then and had many great conversations with him. Thomas is a lovely, gentle soul. I am so happy to hear of his accomplishments. Very impressive. Much love and success Thomas.
