[UPDATE] Celebrations for Independence Day in Humboldt

FireworksA band marching in a parade, bunting draped booths, a velvety night, sparkling and flashing fireworks, the smell of BBQ…where can you find what YOU are looking for this Fourth of July?

Here’s a short guide to what’s officially happening near you in alphabetical order by location (Tell us if you know of more):

Arcata: (Arcata Plaza)

  • On July 4 (Begins at 10:30 ends at 4)
  • No fireworks
  • A tradition for 59 years
  • Lots of food booths and nearby restaurants
  • Live music/roaming performers

Benbow: (Benbow State Park–shuttle from Redway or Garberville) [UPDATED with information from Laura Lasseter, Executive Director of the Southern Humboldt Chamber of Commerce]

  • On July 4
  • Fireworks start about 9:30 p.m. before 10 p.m.
  • A community favorite
  • No food available Moses with BBQ To You will be located at the bottom of Hole Five from late afternoon. (Benbow Inn is nearby for delicious and fancy food)
  • No bands

Eureka: (2nd Street)

  • On July 4
  • Fireworks start at 10 p.m. For best viewing, the Boardwalk (foot of F or C Sts.), and Halvorsen Park (at the foot of L St.)
  • The biggest event around
  • Lots of food booths and nearby restaurants
  • Live music-a bunch of bands

Ferndale: (Main Street)

  • On July 4
  • No fireworks
  • Old-fashioned fun
  • Fire truck rides starting at 10 a.m.
  • Parade at noon

Fortuna: (Newburg Park)

  • On July 3
  • Fireworks start at dark
  • Lots of family fun
  • BBQ 5:30-9
  • Kid’s Activities
  • DJ music

Miranda: (Main Street)

  • On July 4
  • BYOF (Bring your own fireworks) The sparks start at dark. Bring your own safe and sane fireworks and get in on the fun. (No firework stand in town so you must buy early.)
  • America at its small town best (The editor of Redheaded Blackbelt chooses this event for her family)
  • Food starts at noon and runs until 6 p.m. Pulled pork sandwiches and brisket sandwiches.
  • Bounce house.
  • Live music. Ranch Party will be playing.

Happy Independence Day (yesterday)! And have a safe & fun 4th of July day.
Too bad they didn’t have the Kym & the internet back on July 2, 1776 or we’d be celebrating on time! Dang snail mail anyways.
