A Great Place for Eureka Kids to Hang Out This Summer

CapturePress release from the Boys & Girls Club of the Redwoods:

Boys & Girls Club of the Redwoods opened their doors Monday to begin their summer programs. This summer the Club will operate its Children’s Clubhouse and Eureka Teen Center from 11am to 5pm Monday through Friday, from June 24th through August 19th. Memberships are only $50 for new members, and $25 for returning members and last the entire summer. In addition, families are not turned away for inability to pay.

“While children are out of school, it’s important they are still engaged in enrichment programs to keep them from experiencing the ‘Summer Slide,’” says Monica Rose, the Club’s Area Director. “Our summer programs focus on building healthy lifestyles, engaging in reading, math and science, and building positive relationships with peers. In addition, we’re able to provide healthy snacks and a free lunch for members every day, something that many children lack during the summer months when school isn’t in session.”

The term ‘Summer Slide’ refers to the loss in learning that children experience over the summer when they do not have access to enrichment opportunities. Studies show that over time loss of learning from the summer accounts for two-thirds of the 9th grade achievement gap in reading.

One particular program the Club is excited about this summer is teaming up with KEET-TV for a week of solving mysteries with the Odd Squad. In this program, elementary age children will solve math problems along with the detectives on the hit PBS kids show.
