Mountain Lion Spotted Near Riverwalk Shell

mountain lionEmployees of the Riverwalk Shell Station (1791 Riverwalk Drive, Fortuna) reported seeing a mountain lion in their parking lot, earlier this morning at approximately 6AM.  The mountain lion reportedly killed a feral cat near the vicinity of their parking lot.  Employees notified Fortuna PD and Department of Fish and Wildlife.

This area of Fortuna offers a popular walking path along the Eel River.  Should you cross paths with a mountain lion, Department of Fish and Wildlife recommend you do the following:

  • Do not hike, bike, or jog alone.
  • Avoid hiking or jogging when mountain lions are most active – dawn, dusk, and at night.
  • Keep a close watch on small children.
  • Do not approach a mountain lion.
  • If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects. Pick up small children.
  • If attacked, fight back.
  • If a mountain lion attacks a person, immediately call 911.

Please report any additional sightings to the Fortuna Police Department – 725-7550, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department – 445-7251, or Department of Fish and Wildlife – 445-6493.  For emergency situations, please use 911.

Great news. Native predator kills an extremely destructive invasive predator!

Only 20 people in all of North America have been verified as having been killed by a mountain lion, SINCE 1890!!

Fatal cougar attacks are extremely rare and occur much less frequently than fatal wolf attacks, fatal snake bites, fatal lightning strikes, or fatal bee stings!

The majority of the child victims were not accompanied by adults.

A feral cat an “extremely destructive invasive predator”? Where did you learn that fairy tale? Does this look like a “destructive invasive predator”? I’m amazed how ignorant some people can be.

Kill anything they can kill. Squirrels, endangered birds, etc. They don’t discriminate.

If possible please shoo this lion over to my neighborhood as we are overrun by feral cats. I will keep the children inside with their mouths taped shut until the desired result is achieved. Hopefully it will also eat the lady that feeds the feral cats just for the sake of statistical balance.

Because I have lived here and observed “my” Mt Lions for near 50 years now, I feel confident in taking their side when small animals are presented as prey for them.
And because I live with my house cats, I am also sorry for the homeless ones, the lost, the starving, the feral.
To protect the birds, I do this with a new kitten when I find the first feathered body:
I put the dead bird in the cat’s mouth. I duct-tape the mouth shut, with a clear breathing path. I put the cat in the privy, in the dark, for 24 hours. I have never had a repeat offender.
My cats hunt mice and ground squirrels with impunity, love and respect me, and sleep in the house at night. af

Yes, if you live in the hills and have “outdoor only cats” you are in reality chumming for mountain lions.

af – That is just sick. Taping any animal’s mouth shut is cruel. I don’t care what reason you come up with. That’s just plain wrong!

Cruelty is a relative term in the woods. I do what I do for the Common Good, and I sleep just fine at night….with my kitties piled on top. af

Do you have any idea how insane it is to tape a cats mouth shut because YOU don’t like them eating birds! They are hunters! They eat birds, mice, bugs to survive! Should someone tape your mouth shut and put you in a dark room if they don’t like what you eat??? I love birds & hate that my cat kills them, but should we go around taping all animals mouths shut everytime they eat something that we don’t like them eating? Just shut their mouths off from the entire food chain? Block them all from what is in their nature to do? How is this doing good? You say that these kittens your taping are homeless, so let them do what they need to do to survive! You should definitely find homes for your animals. They may do something you don’t like, and you with your control issues might end up doing something to hurt them. Do them a favor and give them to someone that understands how to cherish, love, “RESPECT” & except the animal for what they are!

If you live anywhere in Humboldt County… And I mean ANYWHERE… You live in mountain lion territory.

Just because you don’t see them doesn’t mean they aren’t there.

So please, relax. Use common sense and keep your critters under cover or inside at night. The lions have been among us forever. As it says on the cover of the Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy… “Don’t Panic.”

UPDATE: The cougar was reported to be 45 years old and stalking the Shell Employee. The usual haunts are at clubs and bars; This particular feline had her eyes set on more feral prey, typical of gas stations. Ladies, beware! She will steal away your boyfriends!

Maybe it’s a bunch of feral cats in a mt. lion suit. Trying to get some respect. I often wonder. How many little ones it takes to make one big one?

Beware!
