Two Injured in Traffic Accident North of Richardson’s Grove
Press release from the California Highway Patrol:
On June 11, 2016 at approximately 1634 hours, a 2016 Special Construction motorcycle with two riders was traveling southbound on US 101, north of Richardson’s Grove. For reasons still under investigation, the motorcycle left the roadway and struck a dirt embankment. As a result of the collision, both the driver and passenger were ejected from the motorcycle and sustained major injuries. Due to his extensive injuries the driver [a 63-year-old man from Orangevale] was air lifted from the scene to Mercy Medical Center in Redding, CA. The passenger [a 63-year-old woman from Orangevale] was transported by ground ambulance to St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka, CA. During this incident, US Highway 101 was closed to both northbound and southbound traffic for approximately one hour. All traffic was diverted through Lake Benbow Drive. The cause of this collision is still under investigation, however at this time drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor.
Agencies on scene [were] Cal-Fire, Humboldt County Sheriff Department, State Parks and the CHP.
This collision remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
UPDATE Sunday: Local volunteer firefighters provided critical support. “A Redway firefighter was passing by before any resources arrived and engaged in patient care and even helped load [the] patient in [the] helicopter,” according to Garberville Volunteer Fire Department. A Garberville Fire crew was also on scene helping provide needed care.

Prayers for the riders!
That must have been a very interesting detour. There was a reported tree across the road on the previous post, and there is one-way traffic over a major slide at the Benbow end.
Oh! I see that the tree didn’t fall until this evening. So, how did the accident post come after the fallen tree post… I’m so confused.
I wasn’t on the computer when the accident occurred. I only got the press release about the accident after I had already posted about the tree.
Thanks
It still must have been a wild detour.
Getting your information from the “dishonest” media is like getting dating a girl with a Adams Apple.
I’m hoping I’m misunderstanding but it looks like you think I’m “dishonest.” Can you explain that to me?
This is not a personal attack, this is a statement about information delivery.
The media is chalked full of miss-information and unreliable facts. Resulting in dishonesty.
Very poor information becomes “breaking” news interpreted as factual.
Then there’s the Bias.
Very dishonest, very sad.
In what way was this dishonest?
Doesn’t dishonesty have to be intentional ? Mis information unintentionally is not dishonest it’s ill informed .
Seriously? Nobody else does what kym does around here with up to date info on what’s happening in a secretive rural community. Go back to some troll blog, this actually a community resource. And I’m sure kym kemp has a life too and isn’t going to post things directly right away sometimes.. thanks for all the info and hard work
Agreed.
Prayers to riders.
Yes.
I was listening to the scanner yesterday afternoon. Wasn’t there a Biker with a compound fracture of the leg in Shelter Cove? Also: What is a “Special Construction Motorcycle”? Is it one of those 3 wheeled Can Am things? Technically, anything Chopped, raked or stretched would qualify. Hope everyone will heal quickly! Motorcycling is a lot of fun, except when it’s not. Have a safe happy Redwood Run.
Special construction just means it is built of components (motor, frame etc) not built buy a company like Harley Davidson or Indian
There was a Biker injured at the Cove and medevacked out. I haven’t been able to get any info though.
I really hate to be the spelling police but I can’t help myself, when I see a spelling error it nags at me til I say something about it!!! In this case it’s Medevaced no K, sorry but…!!! ;-]
Medevaced would be pronounced mede-VASED. The Oxford Dictionary says, http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/us/definition/american_english/medevac VERB (medevacs, medevacking, medevacked)
[WITH OBJECT]
Transport (someone) to the hospital in a helicopter or airplane:
the helicopter pilot who medevacked me the day I got shot
I’m with Kym on this one. You may be correct, but language is about communiction, not correctness. Communication is dynamic. New words are made up every day. The history books will record this word as one made up by Kym Kemp to keep her blog clear and easy to understand.
Making up new words may be against the rules, but when did anyone from Southern Humboldt follow the rules? You are my heroine Kym.
I would love to take credit for it but Oxford Dictionary is one of the most prestigious and they use this version of the spelling.
That Helo looks like a REACH helicopter, not Cal-Fire.
We were passing south through there yesterday during the detour. No signs, no hint as to where to go…just a CHP officer blocking the southbound onramp. We guessed and made it back correctly…but really? No help?
The one lane section was interesting, big travel trailers and all.
Why would cal-fire be transporting this patient?
Is cal-fire replacing REACH?
I’m very confused..
Kym , You do a great job. Keep up the hard work. Praying for those injured in the wreck.
[…] a number of motorcyclists around the area and two accidents that required medevacking including one south of Benbow and one in Shelter Cove. We’ve gotten recent information on the one in Shelter Cove. Cheryl […]
Seems like some people are bored and have nothing better to do than pick Kym apart. Go get laid or read a book. Kym, has there been any update on the couple from the wreck? It wasn’t a terrible detour. We were not much later getting home. Hope they are okay aside from the fracture.
I’m sorry. There has been no update on their condition. Once they become patients rather than parties in a car accident their right to privacy trumps the public’s right to know so I doubt we will learn more unless family volunteers more info.
Thank you. Hopefully they are doing okay.
The man is in stable condition in ICU last I heard yesterday.
Thank you, Troy. I appreciate the information.
