[UPDATE] Hoopa Schools Went Into Lock Down Today After Student Brought BB Gun

CaptureA little after 11 a.m., Hoopa Schools were all put on lockdown. Jon Ray, Superintendent of Klamath-Trinity Joint Unified School District, explained that at the high school, a “student thought they saw another student with a gun.” The student, he said, reported this to a teacher who in turn reported to an administrator. The schools in the area then went into lockdown.

A lockdown triggers basic responses. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, the California Highway Patrol, Hoopa Tribal officers and the school resource officer all responded. All students and staff were required to remain in whatever building they were. All doors were locked and window blinds were drawn. Everyone was required to stay quiet.

Meanwhile, the student who was accused of having a gun was located. The student eventually admitted to possessing a BB gun and the gun was located.

Ray said the schools were in lockdown “close to an hour.”

According to this site on California law, because a BB gun is considered a replica of a firearm, the student could be suspended or expelled.

UPDATE from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office:

On Thursday, May 26, at about 11:10 a.m., the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) received a call from the Hoopa Valley Tribe’s School Resource Officer (SRO) requesting assistance for the report of a student with a handgun at Hoopa Valley High School. It was reported the 14 year old juvenile suspect fled off campus after being chased by the SRO.

The schools in the area were put on lockdown. Officers searched the area and were able to detain the juvenile and later located the handgun. The handgun was determined to be a BB gun. This incident will be handled by Hoopa Valley Tribal Court.

Anyone with information for the Sheriff’s Office regarding this case or related criminal activity is encouraged to call the Sheriff’s Office at 707-445-7251 or the Sheriff’s Office Crime Tip line at 707-268-2539.

I highly commend the administration at Hoopa Valley Elementary and the support staff who were able to get all the students, including those on the playground and the lunch room to a safe location within two and a half minutes once they were notified.

A few years ago the school invested in emergency supplies, which included a five gallon bucket with a toilet seat lid.

Yes, students need to go when in lock down.

Due to the lock down students had late lunches.

And we resumed class after the all clear.

It is a harrowing experience for young and older students who do not know the “why” of the lock down.

And it is concerning to parents and guardians as well.

I truly appreciate the administrators at Hoopa Valley Elementary School who had an assembly after the lock down to dispel rumors and to reinforce the reason why we have earthquake drills, fire drills and sadly the need for lock down drills.

The main focus of our school is the safety of both students and staff.

I give a high five for the dedicated professionals at HVES.

And to our safety officer! And the responding CHP, Tribal Police and the Sheriff’s Department.

We value the life of our children and my hope is that the young person responsible gets the help needed.

Proud to be from this river community.
