13233290_1231209956889071_1000415967_nPress release from the California Highway Patrol:

On May 14th, 2016, at approximately 1355 hours, [Reuben Cordrey, age 39 of Carlotta was driving[a 1982 Toyota] eastbound on State Route 36…near mile post marker 13.27.  For reasons still under investigation, [he] allowed [the vehicle] to leave the roadway on the south side.  [The vehicle] then veered back onto the roadway where it overturned and came to rest in the westbound lane of SR-36.  As a result of the collision, [Cordrey] sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The eastbound and westbound lanes of SR-36 at the scene were closed to one-way traffic control for approximately 3 hours to facilitate the collision investigation and the gathering of evidence.  {Cordrey] was wearing his seatbelt and alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in this collision.  The California Highway Patrol Humboldt…is investigating the collision.

36 claims another I’ve lived on this toad for twenty yrs drive it every day ,and I take her serious every time ,and I drive it the same way every time ,but that doesnt n matter because you mess up just a little and it’s all over .look what happened to my long time friend Ted duey.driving home a widdow maker took him out and hurt his wife Joanne my hart breaks for her every time I see her she is so lost and crushed .she has lost alot of weight, but what is a fact that road takes alot of lives .when you drive that road don’t act like Mario Andretti because 36 will take you out.

Exactly right. I’m very sad for all the deaths, disfigurements and surviving families, but this is getting very serious. There will always be occasional unavoidable accidents, but the seemingly endless series of accidents is over the top. Lived on 36 for years even before the many improvements and it was bad, but not this bad. Such a beautiful drive through the coast range. Glad I’m not driving it every day anymore. Please, people, slow down.

So sad and what a tragedy. My thoughts and prayers go out to Reuben’s mom, sisters, and brother, and children. He was a good person. Many prayers are needed in this time.

I call Highway 36 “Murder Highway” now. I learned to drive a shift on 36 as a young woman. That was when there was much less traffic. Now it is nuts. Please, please, people slow down.
