‘Remembering the Children Who Lost Their Lives’
Press release from the Boys & Girls Club of the Redwoods:
For the sixth year, Boys & Girls Club of the Redwoods hosted the Child Abuse Prevention Coordinating Council of Humboldt County for the annual Children’s Memorial Flag Raising as a part of Child Abuse Prevention Month. Many community members were in attendance including representatives from: North Coast Rape Crisis Team, Humboldt County D.A. Victim-Witness Office, Planned Parenthood NorCal Spare Change Program, and Bikers Against Child Abuse.
“Today, we’re here to hold our annual flag raising ceremony remembering the children that lost their lives due to abuse,” says Karen Diers, Board Chair of CAPCC. “It’s important for us to understand what this is about. These deaths are preventable. If you can’t be involved [it’s important to] at least be informed.”
The morning program began with speakers from each of the represented agencies, and closed with raising the flag that is the centerpiece of the national public awareness campaign initiated by the Child Welfare League of America.
“We [at Boys & Girls Club] are bringing our children, our youth’s needs, to the greater community and bringing them together and filling the gaps,” says Boys & Girls Club of the Redwoods’ Executive Director Liz Smith. “Two areas there are gaps are services to teens and services that are affordable and accessible during the summer. We look forward to working with those experts in attendance today to fill these gaps and meet the needs of children and youth in our community.”
