Eyeing Our Elk…
A contented bull elk from the one of the southernmost herds of the Lost Coast relaxes during the warm spring weather in a meadow near Cotteneva Creek in Northern Mendocino.
“As this elk yawns you can see the preoribital gland or slit in front of his eye fully opening,” photographer Lynn Harrington tells us. “Common in the deer family, this gland produces scent which is used for communication during the rut, and calves also use it before nursing. Bulls commonly rub the gland on bushes to scent mark.”

Magnifique!!!
One of those bad boys approached our car at Needle Rock and commenced to pee. And pee and pee and pee. After a while he had everyones attention. Went on and on for ever. It was like “Dude! You are the 5 gallon elk.”
Great pictures Lynn!!
This guy was such a ham! At some point I need to get 4wd and get up there for more photos.
Love the pee story.
I was eating my Cheerios one morning at Usal campground when a bull walked up behind me. Those suckers are BIG at close range.
Awesome photos!
Great pics. Thank you.
