Yesterday about 1:10 p.m., Eureka Police responded to several reports of multiple shots heard inside a house in the 1100 block of Buhne Street. Scanner traffic suggested a juvenile on probation was in the residence.

Over 10 Eureka Police units arrived and surrounded the home. City 1 Ambulance was dispatched to wait nearby until the scene was secure. As a precaution, Eureka High school was locked down until 2:45 p.m.

Officers at the scene located a metal post in the backyard with a number of bullet holes in it. “Evidence on scene suggested that shots were fired from inside the residence towards the outside pole,” said a EPD statement late yesterday.

Eventually, officers attempted to gain entry. The mother of the unnamed juvenile arrived on scene just as the EPD got ready to use the “Shield” to make entry into the front of her home.994cfc4a-614f-4ca0-a60f-61547c66b381
At that point the EPD made entry. The scene was secured and investigated. According to yesterday’s statement, officers “did not locate any victims, suspects, or a firearm.”

Captain Steve Watson tweeted yesterday that ” there are no known related threats to the public at this time.”

As of the last update, EPD was still looking for the juvenile. Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to call the Eureka Police Department at (707) 441-4044.

At one point the Postal Service made a delivery to the suspect’s house. Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor bullets stop these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds…

UPDATE 7:45 a.m.on 4/21: According to Eureka Police spokesperson Brittany Powell, the suspect was located at 8:50 p.m. on the 2000 block of Harrison Avenue in Eureka. He was arrested on unrelated charges and taken to Juvenile Hall. “Our investigation into whether he was actually involved in the incident yesterday is still ongoing,” Powell said.

So a juvenile on probation is shooting a gun out his bedroom window. Gun and Juvenile not found, no threat to the public? This kid is possibly running around town with a gun and nobody should be worried…sounds good!

if this person was using a car recklessly and endangering the public he would be more likely to harm or kill someone. his access to the gun and lack of supervision are more important issues than the gun itself. he was on probation for something, he was home alone with access to a gun that was likely illegally obtained. close the loopholes in gun purchases and possession. help and encourage responsible and legal people in acquiring, safely using and properly securing personal protection firearms.

If the gun was “illegally obtained”, how would more laws help?

Exactly! More laws and regulations do not make us safer. He was a minor. The laws to keep him from having access to guns is already in place. The gun he obtained should of been under lock n key. Maybe it was, and he stole it. No amount of laws or regulations are going to keep the unlawful from obtaining guns. They only penalize the law abiding citizens of their constitutional rights.
