Honoring the 184 Workers Who Have Lost Their Lives on the Job
More than 300 people attended the Caltrans District 1 Workers Memorial which was held at the Caltrans District Office in Eureka today. It honored those who have lost their lives on the job. [All photos courtesy of Caltrans.]
Albee Street in Eureka was closed to through-traffic during the ceremony. Maintenance crews from Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake, and Mendocino Counties all attended the memorial event to honor their fallen friends and colleagues.
The U.S. Coast Guard Sector Humboldt Bay performed a flyover at the Caltrans District 1 Workers Memorial.
Patsy Broeske – widow of Dan Broeske, District 1’s most recent fallen worker – spoke about her efforts to honor her husband by passing legislation to reduce distractions in work zones.
Caltrans West Area Construction Manager Gary Johnson pleaded with event attendees and the public to “watch out for me… because I’ll be watching out for you.”
A cone for each of the 184 workers who have lost their lives–16 from our district.

Slow down when you see the cone zone and please stop texting while driving. You’re not that important.
So sad to see that many easily avoidable deaths. Slow down for the people that keep our roads safe and drivable!
And they aren’t entitled to hazard pay and have they haven’t had a contract since last July…does our government really care?
