Garberville Airport Receives More than $750K to Fix Runway; More Local Airports Get Money, Too

Press Release from Congressman Jared Huffman:

Congressman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) today announced that the Federal Aviation Administration has awarded more than $1.7 million to eight airports in Del Norte, Humboldt, Marin, Mendocino, and Trinity counties. These grants will fund several necessary projects across California’s 2nd Congressional District, including the rehabilitation of thousands of feet of existing runway and studies to update airport master plans and pavement management programs.

“Continued support for our small public airports, as well as larger, commercial service facilities like the Arcata-Eureka Airport, helps to provide services and access to people living in our rural communities who may not be served by major international airports,”said Rep. Huffman. “Ensuring that aircraft and passengers can take off and land safely is a priority for me as I work to improve our national infrastructure.”

Funded projects range in their scope and goals. In Humboldt County, the Garberville Airport received $758,140 to rehabilitate approximately 5,400 feet of existing runway, reconstruct taxiway connecter pavement, and construct new aircraft run-up aprons. The Murray Field Airport received $137,840 to help rehabilitate over 7,000 feet of runway and taxiways, and the Arcata-Eureka Airport received $51,706 to develop a pavement management program.

In Trinity County, the Ruth Airport received $130,000 to update the airport master narrative report and layout plan, and the Trinity Center Airport received $288,675 to fund the design phase for reconstructing existing general aviation apron and hangar taxilane pavement, along with updating the airport master plan.

The Jack McNamara Field Airport in Del Norte County received $95,000 to fund a pavement management program study. The Ukiah Municipal Airport in Mendocino County received $216,000 to fund the design phase for reconstructing more than 4,000 feet of runway and rehabilitate taxiway connectors, along with funding a pavement management program study. The Gnoss Field Airport in Marin County received $73,675 to help rehabilitate 3,300 feet of runway.

Huffman represents California’s second district, which covers six counties including all of Marin, Mendocino, Humboldt, Trinity, and Del Norte, and much of Sonoma Counties. He is a member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, which has jurisdiction over the Federal Aviation Administration, as well as the Committee on Natural Resources.

I wonder if “rehabilitating the runways” in Garberville also means they will finally get some pilot controlled landing lights? Probably not enough money for that. It’s an important airport for medevac, though the conservation camp makes a good backup landing spot for helicopters.

Now if they could find some money to fix old briceland road we’d b in much better shape. Potential evacs from briceland and to the west may critically need that road to get to the airport as a major natural disaster could easily close briceland road.
