Son Arrested After Allegedly Killing His Father With a Baseball Bat Near Laytonville
This is a press release from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:
On 3-28-2016 around 03:30 AM the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a reported altercation between a father and son that resulted in the death of Sanford Sternick. Sternick was 58 years of age.
MCSO Deputies responded to [an area south of Laytonville] where they located and confirmed the death of Sternick from what appeared to be blunt force trauma. The decedent’s son, Jewel Dyer, 25 years of age, was detained at the scene.
The Sheriff’s Detective Unit was called to the scene to conduct an investigation into Sternick’s death. A witness indicated Dyer claimed there was an argument in the early morning hours between he and his father. That argument lead to a physical altercation, which resulted in the father suffering blunt force trauma about the head. A baseball bat, located at the crime scene, was believed to have been used during the altercation.
Dyer was transported and booked into the County Jail where his bail will be set at $500,000. An autopsy is being scheduled and the case will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office for review.
Anyone with information related to this case is requested to contact the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Detectives Unit or by contacting the tip line at(707)234-2100.

Heat of passion. Manslaughter at best. A year in a work camp, three years probation then free. Next case.
How terribly sad. Prayers to all involved in these two men’s lives.
Thank you this is my uncle and cousin. We just found out this morning.
So sorry Jennifer. Two members of your family are gone. Probably a dumb argument that escalated into a tragedy.
a kid does not beat his fathers head in with a baseball bat over a “dumb argument.”
Jr. You don’t know what was going through his head none of us will. Only those who were there and god. Please be respectful.
We can assume a tremendous amount of rage is involved in beating someone to death with a baseball bat. Everything else is speculation right now.
Thank you cresent
What the Frick is going on?
If I were a betting man, I’d bet the kid was on some kind of psychotropic, possible mixed with alcohol or meth.
Or maybe the father was, we don’t know.
I just think it’s a joke that the guy with the hash lab got 500,000 bail, and this murderous P O S got the same. We need to see the difference of violent crimes and non violent. Our system is a fucking joke!!
I disagree. hash lab has a potential of blowing up and causing harm / killing potentially lots of people. So yes It’s double edged sword, just cuz in the particular case your talking about nobody died doesn’t mean that the seriousness of a lab should be over-looked. Non-violent crime or not.
Did you really just try to compare the bashing of someone’s skull (not to mention it was his father), to something that had a zero violence, also if the butane is used in a safe enviorment it is harmless, like outside. It’s the people in city’s and in their apartments that really do the damage. For you to think this mans crime is equal, you are a twisted human being and in need to experience more in life.
People should get all the facts before they start f****** judging the man in custody has mental illness does not excuse the fact he killed his father, but he does suffer from mental illness so I’m told.

Then what’s your point? It still looks like he murdered his father, whos the one really being ignorant?
Stan, the dead father, was disabled…..not that it’s an excuse to be your sons victim, just sayin’
Seems all the facts aren’t in
He’ll plead , not guilty ,due to reasons of insanity just like bullock .
The karma that comes with this act is inescapable.
Life is so great in the triangle, not for this guy and certainly not for the deceased. The worst sort live up here, scum all over.
Trump will kick all of you in the balls soon enough!
I just heard this startling and upsetting news yesterday morning, very disturbing and sad.
I don’t remember if I had actually met Stanford Sternic or not. But I know his brother well, and other family members. His brother was married to my sister for several years.
A senseless murder, and fate that no one deserves.
RIP Sanford.
The chicken fried steak served at San Quentin is not really chicken. Fact.
He won’t go to San Quentin more like high desert (Susanville) and then work camp to pick up trash and cut brush. What a tragedy for all involved prayers to the family.
Sanford Sternick was my ex brother-in-law. I dated/married his older brother Don for about 21 years. I have lots of memories of my ex and I and our son Shawn hanging out with “Sandy”, his ex-wife and his oldest son Clayton. Sanford is my kids uncle and Jewel & his older brother Clayton their cousin. Sandy moved up north when he divorced & sold his Fremont, CA home. We visited him there once but I haven’t seen him since Don & I divorced. He used to like working on classic cars. RIP Sandy. Also, prayers go out to Clayton. He lost his father and now his brother’s life will never be the same. I actually remember hearing that Jewel was a good kid growing up. Some things in life just don’t turn out the way it should have.
