Milky Way Rising

On March 8, before this recent storm started. Christina Lombardi of Lombardi Photography slipped out of her house to capture this image.

“I got a shot in at 4:30 a.m. of the Milky Way rising over Southern Humboldt just before the fog rolled in,” she explained.

Thank you, Christina!

Beautiful! Note the shooting star in the center of the image! Another tip – I always try to remember to open the image in a new browser window so I can enjoy it at full size.

That’s probably not a shooting star. Judging from the arc and shape of the line, it’s more likely a satellite or the space station orbiting the Earth. The length of the line is how far it moved while the shutter was open to make the exposure. A meteor moves very fast and would make a longer streak, usually tapered at one end, during a Milky Way exposure. High flying aircraft also make light streaks during night exposures.

It’s remarkable how many thing are orbiting the earth that the camera can see better than us because the camera sensors are more sensitive to faint light than our night vision eyes.

Did you alter the photo with software? That seems popular these days.

With the Milky Way in the morning sky, summer can’t be far away. I remember summers as a child laying in the grass in the apple orchard, watching the Milky Way and telling spooky stories. Thanks for the memories!

Lovely shot! A good reminder to get up early to enjoy the pre-dawn light.
